Hi Robert, I constructed the whaLe out of layered sheet insulation foam board from home store. After carving foam, I coated it with two coats of epoxy, then painted it. Thanks for your interest, Tony
Hello terrulian, I usually use hand cut gears, but in this case I used a toothed drive belt and 2 different sized sprockets salvaged from an old vacuum cleaner. Besides reducing the speed it also increases the torque to power the mechanism. Glad you like my work, thanks.
Hi Terrulian, I cut the gears from plastic cutting board using my bandsaw using paper template from Gear template generator by Matthias Wendel - makezine.com/2007/08/13/gear-template-generator/ Good luck!
@@uniquewhirligigs3610 Admirable!! I was afraid of that. I don't have a bandsaw and although I admire Matthias, I do almost everything with hand tools and don't think I have the skill/patience/perseverance to create gears by hand. Keep up the good work.
@@terrulian I think we are on the same page here. I make lots of whirligigs just by using hand tools as a hobby. The gears are an excellent idea for this one above. (from Brazil)
