does the fishing line have much elasticity? i heard that if you were wrapping it, it could cause damage if it is a wire that can become sharp like floss. have you seen this kind of problem with using line?
I’m literally directing/stage managing a Fringe play next month and I’m the definition of fake it til you make it. Thanks for all your help serious you’re a life saver
hey thanks for the videos! I keep having to wear headset microphones which is super annoying because they are quite uncomfortable to wear. Could you maybe go into "which microphone for which show/occasion etc."? In other words, how do sound designers choose which microphones they put on us performers?
Super interesting (and completely understandable) to hear your thoughts on Perth, as a young performing arts worker who lives here! I’ve loved growing up in Perth, however I do agree it’s probably not the easiest or most exciting city to navigate as a visitor. Also working in this industry… well, let’s just say the majority of people study here, and then very swiftly move over east to pursue better work prospects. I’m still in WA for the time being, however I do feel like one day I may have to leave if I want to keep pursuing a serious career in the arts. It’s a bit hard to make a living in this industry in this rather small city where everyone knows everyone, and the opportunities can be so limited.
Fantastic. You’re helping me better my work so much and giving me tips that I can use when working on shows. But I was wondering what type of wire you use for your mic rigs. I mainly do school shows so we don’t have that much time to prep but using wire would help a lot
This is terrific! I’m a sound tech in Chicago, and this is exactly the kind of thing I wish I had seen before my first pro production. Sound for theatre is such a weird thing, so happy to see someone sharing how we actually do it. The terminology difference is interesting to me. In the USA, we would say SR (stage right) and SL (stage left) rather than PS and OP. Do you use the terms A1 for the mixer and A2 for the radio tech? Or is that also a country-specific thing?
We absolutely also use SR/SL, I’ve just always personally used PS/OP more not really sure why haha Our A1 would be our Head of Sound (who does not most of the mixing and leads the team) our A2 is Deputy Head of sound, and the A3 is the radio tech! Some shows might only have 2 members some might have 4, but that’s a pretty typical team here
So glad to have finally found this channel! It's pretty much exactly what I've been looking for in terms of insight into the touring Theatre Industry, specifically from an audio/ mic tech perspective. Thank you so much for making these videos!
Love the vid, Welcome to Perth and congrats on an amazing show season so far. sad i wasn't available for the bump in and out as I have only heard good things from the local crew. out of curiosity do you know if the school talk you did was recorded and is publicly available? thanks for the vid and hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Perth.
Fell in love with Come From Away from the cast recording. Finally got to see the touring show in Nashville after COVID lockdown. Took my best friend to see it. Such an awesome show.
Fantastic breakdown. I've worked in the industry for years myself and still find it interesting to see how other sections of the arts, or even just other people do things. The only thing I would comment on is that, at least in this script in particular, the difference in colours for different types of cues isn't very friendly for those who are colour-blind. I've had to be more deliberate as of late with making colours very distinctly different and even using reference palettes as more and more people have mentioned this to me as a struggle they've had with my own tech scripts. Lovely video though! Keen to see more.
This is an excellent point thank you so much for flagging this, something worth considering when colour coding or maybe even using different fonts instead?
Monique, I just discovered your channel, and I am LOVING these videos and the look into what it takes to put on POTO. Thank you! I did have one question though. Does the Phantom's mask introduce any complication in micing the performer? I would imagine that the mask has to be set off from the performer's actual skin around the cheek and jaw so as not to rub and create a sound that the mic picks up. Is that an issue, or one that I dreamed up in my mind? Thank you again for the amazing look inside the production. Subscribed!
Thanks so much! The mask wasn't a huge issue, we placed the mic above the eyebrow on the side the mask didn't cover very much out of the way of any scratching. There's photos of the mic up over on my instragram!
Nice video. If you can forgive a small suggestion from Durham , England. I’m a retired Paediatrician/Neonatologist and sometime microphone technician. Apart from the medical clear membranes tegaderm and the like which work great, I have another tape for the most precious IVs in neonates and children. Especially if they are moving around. Hypafix. It’s not expensive but sticks brilliantly. Alcohol also helps get it off. It’s white but will take make up on top! By the way some kids cry if you are removing tegaderm. If you pull it out sideways and lengthways looking to stretch it like a pizza it breaks the adhesion and is pain free ti remove
@@monique_tech Hypafix is great, and exists in transparent version, it's quite like Tegaderm but matte and so easier to paint/make up. I use ref n°7237800 (5cm*10m) on opera broadcasts. Also like Blenderm which is also matte but a bit thicker so less discrete, but easier/quicker to rig. Loved the sider demo, do you put any weight on the wire inside the costume for it to get back in automatically or does it just work naturally?
Ditto! I'm part of house crew and I often run lights for these kinds of shows, I would love to have this kind of documentation! I greatly appreciate you sharing this knowlege so performers/designers can write better scripts for technicians.
I couldn't agree more on the "give them your mondays" thing, and I say that as a German roadhouse crew member, so it's really a universally great gift for *anyone* working in theatre.
Absolutely love this! About to start being a tourist in my own city hahaha Additional spots: Bar Planet, ofcourse 😏 Bad Hombres, vegan gf Mexican in walking distance from the Capitol theatre 😉
Oh my gosh I loved the energy of this video, so chaotic and funny but also so educational too! Definitely better than any professional cooking show I've seen!
