Very good interview. I always appreciate how straight forward Neri is. Very correct on alot of facts, however, one note, the introduction of black cuban culture to the USA happened before the revokution and mariel. Cubans had been influencing Jazz since before that and many Cubans of color would migrate to places like Tampa and New York City in the early 1900s. The infusion started in the early 20th century.
I hope to actually catch a live session one day. I do want to ask a question that is confusing because you mention the 1862 Homestead act, which granted 160 acres of land to anyone who had never bore arms against the US, but from government lands. Did the Gregories then sell their 160 acres they acquired to the Merricks?

I lived in Miami for a few years in the early 1990’s. I lived on NE 75 street in Belle Meade. We were told it was one of the first planned communities in Miami. Not sure if it’s true, but I love the history of Julia Tuttle and Miami.
