Iam from New Mexico, but I never realized so many people built so close to creeks in steep terrain. We have flash floods here and never build by creeks. At least those who know don't. Appreciate your videos.
Hi Bluebird. In mountainous regions, flat land is very scarce and is almost always in the narrow valleys between the mountains. In this very economically depressed region of Appalachia, folks just don’t have the means to blast away rock mountain sides to build a home. Most locals refer to these valleys as “hollers” (slang for hollow, I think). Unfortunately, the valleys are also where the water runs down off the mountains. So there is a stream of some sort in every valley, thus making it nearly impossible to build away from a stream. We got an unprecedented (all time local record) amount of rainfall in a very short period of time.
