Hi nice speakers indeed the MG2 Congratulations ! i hope you will restore the other one. Moreover I have a question about the JVC a-x3. There is a guy here selling one for 100 euro. What is your opinion of this amp ? i have seen a very robust power supply usually a good sign but ... Thanks a lot, gino
@@georgeglas68 Thank you very much again. I was misled by the 460W of max power consumption reported on the back. I see newer amp with 150 max 200W of power consumption I will ask for a discount in case Kind regards, gino
Oh wacko; pickin’ mine up 2morro. Had A400X back when & wasn’t @ all disappointed (Rega + Bose spkrs). Had an almost harsh CD-like quality 2 the sound/was shocked. A400 should b even livelier
I used to have the same setup, the Q35's bass suck though, bought some Opera Duetta speakers and they had so much more depth and punch. Never get rid of the Ki 63 signiture; I regret selling mine, its still a top notch CD player, same with the A400.
Really? I have the 63 KI too and I did some A/B testing with Tidal coupled to a Google Chromecast and did not really hear a lot of difference. Dali Zensor 3 speakers with a 80s vintage SONY stereo amp.
Have upgraded to a Nad c370 & upgraded the speakers to Kef IQ5 SE. The NAD amp is a great amp. However they have a inbuilt design fault in the protection circuit which will cause them too fail. I now sell the kit too repair the NAD c370.
I've also got this A-400 and it is incredible. Paired with huge floor speakers upgraded to Cerwin Vega spec in the states.. Magnificent. Beyond anything. I call it the stereo that ate London :)
+Karen MNE Agreed Karen, I too have the original A400 and you have done the right thing by choosing high efficiency speakers. I first heard a showroom A400 model with big Philips FB690s made for them by Marantz in Belgium. I grabbed one on the turn!!
+Mhhugo I've got a vintage pair of Sansui S-815 3 way speakers. Upgraded to Cerwin Vega the mid-range and tweeter ages ago. Each speaker has a 12" cone woofer, a 5" cone mid-range and a 2 1/2" tweeter. They can handle 160 watts of power, acoustic suspension. These are pretty tall measuring 31" tall x 15 1/4" wide x 11 1/2" deep.
+Karen MNE hi Karen, an acoustic suspension design is actually a harder push than a bass reflex speaker, but normally more accurate with nice quick bass decay. I always like the Sansui speaker cabinet designs, my favourite being the SP series from 1974-77 or so. Their Achilles heels were the odd, mixed technologies in the tweeters and sometimes the midrange. They often had horn tweeters for instance and these would be well worth changing for something better - such as a metal or silk dome design. I admire your hobbyists approach to hi-fi, and your liking of vintage components (so do I).. To me this represents the best of hi-fi - when real advances were being made and technology competition was at its zenith.
+Mhhugo I believe at the time I had the tweeters and midrange changed to Cerwin Vega for the reason you say, to really improve the speakers over-all. They are fantastic with the A400. Like they were made for each other. But the sound is so loud that I wouldn't dare use them past 4 on the volume, not because of distortion but because it is an extreme experience and police might be called by the neighbors.. Normally I drive them at 2 and it fills the house, garden and neighbors walls.. Incredible sound.
+Karen MNE LOLs!! Karen, there's no doubt that older speakers like the classic Pioneers, Sansui and Kenwood (and of course even the most modern Cerwin Vega) are very high efficiency designs - in the mid-nineties or higher dB-wise. So, low amp settings are all that is required for ear-splitting levels. We shouldn't forget Cerwin Vega! sports the exclamation mark for good reason as part of its name. And their slogan for years has been "If it's too loud, you're too old"!! But look at it this way: You can always say, "My neighbours only listen to the best music. Mine." Have a great weekend Karen! ..Marc
Feduplurker - did something similar - connected up to Philips FB690s (made in Belgium) and I have not heard such floor shaking bass in my life - staggering dynamics. Completely unexpected....
George, that's great. Really, it's amazing to think that for the money you spent (and a whole lot more) the performance of your system has not been bettered in more than 20 years. The combination of an A400, the naked original, and the CD-63 KISI is going to take more than 2000 pounds to match. And even then, the outcome would be different and not necessarily better. The Q35s are still a class act too. Sweet. I'll just comment on Feduplurker too.....
They are kef Q35,great speakers, however i feel at times the mid range is a bit lacking. Have posted another video in HD. Have tried this amp and CD with Tannoy (Sixes) 636,the mid range was better, however the high frequency where just now there.
