Meaning after he wins the $100 question, then going on to win the $200 question, does he give back the $100 so that he can win the $200, or does he get to keep both the $100 and $200? Another example: Upon answering Question #5 correctly, does he have a cumulative total of $2100 or substitutive winnings of only $1000?

He didn’t win a million dollars. He lost half of that to state and federal taxes. The IRS takes 37% and in the state of California you’ll pay another 13%. If he was smart he didn’t touch what was left and invested it. But most people buy stupid stuff with game show and lottery winnings, often ending up broke or worse off than they were before.
