Hey Doug...my email isn’t working, but his daughter, Hila, wants to keep his page going and his legacy alive, by people inspired by his work, posting their videos on his page. Ahron Gropper (africanmeat) passed at 66. He had a heart attack, which led to a TBI, which led to an infection. Sorry to tell you on a video of yours...but I found his videos by you announcing his work.
Doug I think you might have shamed me into fixing some of my hiccups, or to be truthful screw ups. I have a few you can hardly see for dust or sawdust, well done buddy
that was not my intention Alan, lol I have many laying around my shop that need to be fixed, these were already sold and came back to be repaired or money returned, I just thought I would share the repairs with everyone. Thanks again for watching
Doug, to get the smooth cuts you do with the Irish grind gouge, do you knock the bur off the wings or leave it on? I tend to get a lot of catches when using a traditional tool instead of carbide on epoxy.
Great repair work. I’m thinking that showing this type of video is a good thing once in a while so people can see some of the ways they can work around problems we all face. Thanks for sharing Dougie.
Alumilite wasn't available up here until a few years ago when it came to Michael's stores, and by this point I was pretty much done with epoxy so it did not affect me much. But I had seen some of the videos where different brands of pigments would react to strangely with that resin. Well, sure can be a friend of mine who is new to resin bought a kit from there and he had troubles and assumed it was him. I had to dig up a few old videos to show him that there's occasionally interactions with that brand and he's got his confidence back now. :) But it was really good to see you do those repairs. Think about how many bowlbys might be saved from what people watched today.
I wasn't trying to bash Alumilite, it just had a reaction with that plexiglass logo coin, I used it to finish the video in time for my normal time slot, it has a 4 hr demold time, no other reason. I don't normally promote it as Totalboat sponsors my channel,
Well done. Funny how much stuff can happen after the fact. I use paper stickers (don’t have logo coins) that I stick on the bottom. Then a thin application of UV resin and it’s all set. The advantage to the paper logos for me is…… they are inexpensive and I’m poor plus I can number each piece on the logo. “Normagene’s Kayla Collection” But one I just did I didn’t put a thin layer of UV prior. Now I know to UV seal the bottom FIRST… then put my sticker and cover with a thin layer of UV resin. Why… because I had some air bubbles come thru under the sticker. Not a big deal but I won’t make that mistake again…hopefully 😂
I admire your honesty in showing us the 'troubled' pieces and you going through to process of repairing them! You could have easily done the repairs without telling us and only you and the owners would have known. You are not only a master wood turner but you are an honest and reputable man! Thank you, Doug! ❤❤❤
I have yellow cedar from BC Canada and is very hard wood. I think you would enjoy turning it. Would you like to try it. Barry Mullen, Bellingham, Washington State. Let me know and I will send you a piece.
Looks nice, Doug. The finish problems are minor. I hope the new bearings solve the vibration problem. I'm expecting to see some of those cutoffs in a future project.
Doug, you continue to knock off my socks! I knew this was going to be great, you bled for this project! Fantastic color and that live edge is the bomb! Thanks for sharing!!
