We will often use freeze dried beef liver, canned chicken, or even hotdogs. However, if your dog is highly food motivated, we suggest trying their kibble first before moving on to higher value rewards.
You make it look so easy 🙂 I still have issues on the turning left with Rieka like you were illustrating. I've started letting her know ahead of time with "turn" she's starting to get the hang of that and when I say turn she backs off and watches me to let me make that turn without walking into her 🙂
I need to lessen the “poop distractions.” Lubbock parks have been really gross and I blame the pet owners for not cleaning up their mess. I want my dogs to obey my command to not pause for the Poop!
The circle method is great to teach the dog where we want him when we walk. By turning in tight circles he learns to stay clear of our feet, which makes for a much safer walk.
I really need to work on this with both of my dogs. I have had some “near injuries” with door issues. There has just always been too much excitement that happens when going in and out of the door!
Gimli is amazing and such a beautiful boy. I especially liked the end when you and he were interacting with “Place.” You were performing Magic with him! Looked really fun!
Good stuff. Treats not necessary every time Fido does it correctly. Saying, "Good girl!" in a cheery voice will get the job done; pats on the head, scritching their ears is plenty. I could go on and on, but you'd get bored of me complimenting you repeatedly. Can't think of any fix ums.
Thank you! He’s a great representation of his breed! Unfortunately, he doesn’t belong is- but to a local family so we don’t have his breeders information.
My goodness, good freaking job! Are you watching Joel Beckman or Hamilton Dog Training? You have both skills. I like videos like this. Your patience, walking cadence and commands are spot on.
Thank you! While we are familiar with those names, they were not included in our training. However, we seem to closely mirror the monks of new skete if you’d like to look into them.
Thanks! Neither dog is completely through their training in this video but our hope is to give some coaching pointers for their owners after they return home.
That is a great question. And the simple answer is relying on the obedience that she has learned through the process. There are a few choices on how to teach your dog to greet others politely. One is through, utilizing the place command and letting them remain on place until their energy subdues. Another option is keeping them in a strict heel and sit or down by your side. Once a dog is solid on their obedience, there are a number of ways to handle this issue.
Shelly, you are an outstanding trainer, and Mack .. of course .. makes my heart miss a beat. I've had the immense privilege of loving 3 Dobies. Folks, do NOT shortchange your Doberman on the training and socialization end. You will be forever grateful if you do, and experience heartbreak if you do not. ♥
I wish my dobbie was that well trained. Jazz (She) is 7 months old and very good except when there are distractions, so pretty much any where outside she is overwhelmed by stimuli and permanently distracted. Any ideas apart from patience?
