Personal flying videos and some hopefully helpful demonstrations of avionics and other equipment based on questions raised on aviation forums.
Although I am a CFI (see my website, www.midlifeflight.com and my Facebook page, facebook.com/midlifeflight), none of the videos should be used in place of personalized, one-on-one flight training
I recently bought a plane and for the first time had some of these "toys". This was the BEST introduction I have seen! Thanks so much and I wish you guys were closer to me (:-D)
I used the NASA Report- ASRS many times during my career. Most of it was for stuff about airtports or operations. The few times I felt I needed to file for something more serious I did so with out hesitation and guilt free. I carried blank forms in my flight bag. It’s a good deal - use it.
Is it just my imagination, or are the REILs flashing a Morse code sequence with pauses in between? It looks like 1 2 1 5 8 1 1 1 3 1, etc. That doesn’t seem to match the airport frequencies or anything. Or do they just need maintenance or meant to be random so they’re more recognizable?
Thanks for sharing this - I just had a flight today and stumbled on the very simple VOR TO and FROM decision - Compared to Analog gauges where you can read To and From the G5 can be tricky as you show in your video - I will use it to remind myself on the proper use (2 Arrow pointing in same direction = G5 Courseis showing TO, if both arrow are point 180 opposite then G5 Course is FROM) 6:30 to 8:00 in your video
Configuration of this is installation is wrong! HSI page on the G5 AI should be disabled per part23 AML STC installation manual. You should not be able to select HSI on G5 AI. However the G5 HSI should be able revert to AI mode automatically or can be selected manually.
The OBS function around the 9:30 to 11:00 times was exactly what I was looking for. I fly in and out of a class delta with crossing runways that are only about 40 degrees different, and after 50 approaches I STILL have a hard time setting up for one versus the other. Having the bold runway displayed should help!
I know this is an old video, but I have literally just subscribed to RU-vid to make this comment! Thank you so much, I was struggling with understanding holds, and there is loads out there about which way to enter the hold, but not a lot that helps you determine where the hold is in relation to the fix. This absolutely nailed it for me, thank you so much! Absolute LEGEND!
The third unit is a Garmin GPS. That's where the navigation information for both G5s comes from. Their airplane is equipped with one, so they demonstrate how they work together.
I have used KABE for practice instrument approaches in recent weeks in my transition from steam gauges to the digital cockpit. Allentown approach has done a good job of vectoring me around weather....nothing more serious than moderate rainshowers... several times. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. Enjoy the glass transition. It's a lot of what I do when teaching. There's definitely a learning curve - more like an accustomization curve - but it eventually becomes second nature.
would love to know what the pilot had for a route. you'd be surprised how many pilots know the correct route but file something more direct, then get upset when amended. welcome to the northeast...
With the speed that some pilots read that clearance back (I work an adjacent sector at ZDC) they know EXACTLY what they should have filed. Or they filed it, and someone at a center to the south of here cleared them direct and the pilot didn't question it. This particular one is probably the biggest pain in the neck FRC I have to issue. Readbacks like this are par for the course because of all of the fixes.
@@bart99gt you hit one of the big takeaways I see. Many GA pilots fear getting it wrong. Sounding stupid. Getting snark. But It sounded like both pilot and controller were comfortable with the fact that the pilot was not able to get it all in one shot. Pain in the neck but par for the course. No big deal. Your other point happened to me once. I was returning south from FRG. Decided to try something a little different. Looked like it got accepted but when I called, I got the FRC for the route I knew I should have filed :D
Welcome to the Mid-Atlantic, and the North East is even crazier. At least flying out here always keeps us on our A game, the simplest route can be an adventure. Thanks for sharing!
