Jeez, I was 24 when we performed on that show. Popular music has changed so much, but you're right though. There's loads of great music still being made if you look for it on Spotify and whatever. Don't just rely on the radio.

That first band on …where were all the strings and keyboards coming from ?
@karlbarlow
@karlbarlow 5 месяцев назад
The show was televised in studio A while Johnny Patrick's orchestra were set up in studio B. And with an audio monitor from the show, the orchestra played the accompaniment in real time to that first band while the band had a small monitor speaker allowing them to hear the orchestra. It was a really crap sound and you had to strain your ears to hear the orchestra. We (the last band Destiny) only realised later we were drifting in and out of time with the orchestra.

Blimey what a load of rubbish...I watched the 80s version and this was no better...all these talent shows including opportunity knocks were abysmal...I wouldn't normally say this but for once...thank goodness Punk came along...... you now can understand why they had a go at the establishment... mickey most was spot on if he thought they lacked tallent... I have never watched any of the pop idol nonsense and its ilk... Jim Davidson or Lenny Henry could not fail looking back..whilst this rubbish was on, BBC 1 had DR Who with Tom Baker on and pulled better viewing figures ...

Stand up comedy is so hard to do well and hit the mark. Thats why Manning, Miller, Carson, Goodwin et.al. are rightly revered as kings of a very difficult trade.

@karlbarlow
@karlbarlow 8 месяцев назад
Hi Andrew, I've said this a few times, but my explanations are buried amongst the loads of comments. I was on this particular show and about 16 years ago, somebody had put up the performance of 5 A Side, the first band. I got in touch with whoever put it up and it turned out that they'd approached Albert Stevenson, the producer, after seeing a documentary about the Maori act. Anyway Albert was very kind to send them back a copy of the broadcast tape, which the guy put onto a DVD for me. Albert will have passed on long ago, but I'm sure whoever is in charge of his estate, will be sitting on many more of those broadcast tapes.

Jack Parnell comes across as clueless in his analyses. Calling Flamenco guitar 29:13 ‘not real guitar playing’ and then taking about 49:29 ‘instruments not being quite right’. Mickie Most on the other hand was brilliant and insightful in most of his criticism. Great upload
@karlbarlow
@karlbarlow 10 месяцев назад
Thanks, I agree with your opinion of Jack Parnell. He just rode on the back of his old man, Val Parnell. Had his own orchestra at one time, but I guess in name only. I can't imagine he arranged any of the music for it. He had been a talented pit drummer though.

@karlbarlow
@karlbarlow 11 месяцев назад
I'm afraid not. I was lucky to get this one episode, thanks to the son of one of the lads in the first group 5 A Side. They'd approached Albert Stevenson the producer of the show and he let them have a broadcast copy of the it. I doubt that Albert is still alive, but his heirs might have access to whatever collection of shows he may have kept.

@karlbarlow
@karlbarlow Год назад
Hi Mistofoles you're right, the plectrum is used to pluck the strings. The capo, that they're on about, goes on the neck to hold the strings down, if the guitarist wants to change the key and make the chords easier to play.
