I have been playing guitar since the age of 14 and I absolutely love it. I have been a professional guitarist since 2005 and I am usually involved in several projects at once including Tuition, session work, live shows and my own band "Steve Fletcher & The Angels of Mercy. I have an alternative fingering suggestion for the 'crunch' section here shown at 10:27. For me, as a less competent player, I find moving quickly up and down the fretboard without losing my place difficult so to keep everything in the same(ish) place and reduce the movements try: 000540, 000330, 000110, 000010, 003100, 0003300, 000010, instead. I hope I got that right. Same notes just less movement.
@@joelturpin8111 thanks for getting in touch. Way ahead of you on that song. Here you go... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cBp5YK5XqC8.html
Appreciate the re-upload. Tuning donw the b-string 10cents does help me to get the sound right. And Steve: Just to get it right...if I wanna send you to send me the tabs, all I have to do is "buy you a coffee"?
This is the song that made me pick up the guitar in the first place! Excited to watch this later and revisit this song. Cheers Steve and thanks for the lesson(s)! Keep em coming.

I'm constantly torn between this and "Animals" as my favorite Pink Floyd album. I have never understood why "The Final Cut" is so hated. I love all of the solos.
Animals is 100% my all time favourite album. But Final Cut is up there as one of my favourites. As I said in the intro, it's worth buying for the solos alone. Gilmour has never played more beautifully before or since in my opinion.
How great was Gilmore! He had used mainly the Minor Pentatonic scale everyone else had used in that time. Yet he was so unique, sounded how much different. A true genius.❤❤❤
Freakin awesome - man, seriously, how did MK come up with such a mind blowing series of notes - was it improvised? I say that because if you look at their live performances on RU-vid from around when they recorded On the Night, his solos are significantly different. Also, what genre would you categorize this as - prog? It’s always struck me as a big departure from their earlier stuff which certainly capped MK’s legacy as a versatile and great modern guitarist. And I can relate - I was 16 when this came out too - was obsessed. A different and long list time!
Hey Steve, I followed your Facebook and subscribed to your You Tube because I was keen to get the tab of the final solo for Sultans. Can't find a way to message though. Do you not give this away to subscribers anymore?
Good stuff. Queen II will always be their best for me along with ANATO. I may have to give another chance to some of their most recent albums as I had pretty much given up on their studio albums after Jazz (I agree that it sounded lazy for musicians of such talents)
And yet you took the time to comment and help spread the algorithm throughout the RU-vid matrix. Thankyou for helping spread my business with your negativity!
5:30 that’s how I do it - playing the octaves. When I used a pedal it was a momentary switch not a ramping pedal. They both sound good. And where you do the tap (I like it) I use a harmonic to raise the octave. Great job!
These days Steve Hackett tends to do more pedal using for octave stuff. I tried to approach it more for how to do it if you've NOT got a humongous pedal board! Thanks for taking the time to comment. 👍
I'm a reasonably decent guitar player with the skill level required to play these parts, however I can't fathom how a person could have the patience to learn and remember every single lick to absolute perfection like you have done. I just don't have the attention span. I'm really trying though because I need to learn this song!
For me its a toss up between 'Dire Straits' and 'On Every Street' for No.1 position then 'Love over Gold' a very close second place. 'Making Movies' would be last place
Hi Steve! Congratulation to Charlie's birthday! I installed the EMGs years ago and put the battery between the springs which makes a battery change pretty easy. There are also discussions about an 18V mod which I never tried. If you do so please let us know. Thanks for sharing that emotional moment.
Great review, and I have to agree with you on my of the points. The only difference between us is the On Every Street tour. I've listened to many of their gigs over 91 and 92. I have to say Telegraph Rd Basel must be the best version of that song, period. Listened to other 91 and 92 versions and not even close. He's licks in that final solo are amazing, better than alchemy in a lot of ways. I guess you could swap in and out the best licks from both versions, alchemy, and Every Street tour, and u will have the ultimate version of that song. Sound wise. The EMG SA's aren't as twangy as the new SAX's, and obviously not a patch on a strat passive single coils, however you will note that Knopfler was wanting to do a replay of the alchemy clean sound. He was obviously goung for a more driven heaver feel. With more OD or gain on the Amp. You will NOTE that he has the active tone pot activated and using position 4 neck middle pickup. By activating that mid boost, you lose that top end quack that u get with a strat. So he's clearly going for a more rocky driven feel, which he gets. Looking at his Amp settings dure this tour, you see the same.
Thank you Steve, always wonderful. A rather personal question: Would you say playing the signature Strat is still something special for you or is it in the end just a normal Strat? Prices exceeded to more than 10k Euros after production stopped so it's definitely out if my range.
That's a great question. I'm very glad that I've got it yes and I will never get rid of it. It IS an amazing guitar. I couldn't say it's worth £10k when you could buy a '57 reissue for £2k and get a Seymour Duncan SL1 or similar for around £80 and, pretty much, have essentially the same instrument.
Another fabulous lesson. Sounded great with great to ne and effects. Can you share with us all what effects, amps settings you used? Ie delay settings ms/repeats/mix Compressor and settings Amp clean or drive bass/mid/treb/pres bright or normal channel. All this alone would make a great video lesson. Dailing in MK tones
