I recently changed my channel name from Folded D to Nealwho. The core content of this channel is not going to change. I’m going to continue to make demos, tutorials and jams with various musical equipment. You are welcome to make suggestions on what my videos should contain, and I encourage any, and all feedback on my material.
If you don’t know already, I’m in the band Nazcanaut. We have an album out called The Nightside Assembly. Get your physical copy or digital copy at Bandcampnazcanaut.bandcamp.com

Couple of questions: this mod is a dial. So does that mean it “partially erases” if the knob isn’t all the way to the off position? And secondly, if after recording in the erase off position, for the exact length of the tape loop, if you then turn down the input volume, will the loop preserve for longer as the input volume (guitar/line volume) has been zeroed out? Ps: I’ve emailed support about buying this mod. I think you can install it easily. There is a link to purchase $183. I’ll see if this is the case and update here.
Those are good questions. The mod dial does partially erase, but it's not linear, so it starts erasing towards the top 90%. I haven't tested turning the input volume down after recording. Unfortunately, I'm not able to test that for a couple of months.
The Sound On Sound switch on the standard EF-X3 is just to enable/disable the 4th playback head. From their site, "Sound On Sound is another head that can be switched on over the top of all the head mode settings or you can use the SOS head independently." The Erase Head Mod allows you to turn off the erase head which puts it in overdub looping mode. At that point the unit continues to record and overdub new sounds over old sounds. Because the record head is always recording, each loop becomes a bit quieter on each pass. Turning up the feedback can keep the loop level the same, or much louder on each pass, but it also is stacking delay over delay on each loop.
It's confusing because on other devices- Korg Stage Echo, EP-3, RE-301- the sound on sound function is an extra head before the erase head, so that when it's engaged everything on the loop plays back as with this mod. I'm not sure why they named it that instead of just head 4.
Really like the complexity that arrives at around 14:40. Sounds like gongs are mixed in to that. I just got a Lyra8 in December, have immersed myself in almost daily jams to learn this beast. Your video shows there is so much possiblity with Pulsar 23.
Thank you! Glad you like it. I really dig the Pulsar 23, and I've had my eyeball on the Lyra 8 for a long time. I think they would pair together very well.
@@nealwho Lyra 8 is awesome. It really is an instrument to learn, and tuning can be frustrating for some people. I haven't found this to be the case for me. I think this is all of Soma, they make instruments.
YT algorithm knows I'm looking at the DFAM and brought me here. Gotta say, although industrial isn't one of my fave genres, I really enjoyed this, very nice work. 👍🏽☺️
Cool! It would’ve been interesting to have you recording new material with the erase head off, to hear how the old layers fade out while new content is added.
I a deep dive of the erase head mod, and recently released it. It includes overdubbing. You can find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HJcyojuy3eQ.html
That was incredible. I could listen to that for hours. That erase head mod is brilliant. For people who own an Echofix unit and want to achieve a similar sound could they move the tape behind the erase head to disengage it? or maybe put something over the erase head to stop it from erasing? I ask because i'm in the market for an Echofix and the retailers in my area of the world don't sell any with the mod.
Thank you, glad you like it! It doesn't look like there is a way to route the tape behind the erase head. You may be able to put something over the erase head, but I would be too afraid of damaging the erase head, and it would have to be very smooth as to not snag the tape. If you buy direct from Echo Fix, you can contact them and have them install the Erase Head Mod on purchase. Existing owners should be able to send Echo Fix the unit for installation. You could contact them and see if they allow installation by an affiliate company near you. I believe they also have a Write Head Off Mod. I wish I got that mod as well.
@@nealwho thanks for the reply. Based off your video alone I’m talking with the guys at Echofix about getting myself an EF-X3 with the erase mod. So thanks for creating such an amazing performance because without seeing it I’d have gone for the normal version. What does the write head off mod do to the sound. You’ve got me intrigued? I might have to get that too.
@@lukeneptune3820 If you check out @Hainbach, he has a video demoing the Echo Fix 2 with the erase head mod. When he engages the mod, it no longer writes to the tape. Mine is always writing to tape. I'm assuming he has a separate write head mod as well. I could be wrong. Being able to engage the write head and erase mod separately would be ideal. If the erase head mod and write head mod were tied together, it wouldn't be as cool. Having the record head always on, reduces the volume on each pass of the loop.
@@hoover728 It looks like the video I'm referring to isn't on Hainbach's youtube channel. It's actually on the @echofix channel. The video description mentions Hainbach. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pn0YVA-myBE.html
Hey I have one question how you are selecting the step with Midi???? That functionality is part of the MAFD I guess because the Advance/Clock input doesn't allow that. Maybe the MAFD is triggering so fast the advance to select based on the incomming Midi note?
Nice jam! Just bought the MF-102 last night, looking forward to trying it with the DFAM. Got it for €300, can’t complain! Pity the other Moogerfooger’s are so expensive.
Glad you like it! It is a bummer the Moogerfoogers are so expensive. I wish the new Moogerfooger plugins would be a good replacement, but the plugins doesn't come anywhere close to the real deal.
This is an old video so hopefully you’ve gotten the pitch sorted, but I just built this last weekend and had a similar issue. What I eventually figured out was that the tune trimmer was cranked up several octaves so it would only respond to the higher octaves on my keystep too. Once I figured that out I was able to tune it properly and get it to respond to pitch in the right octaves. Hope this helps you or someone else!
Impressive. Sounds as good as the high priced modulars. You should have way more "likes" than this, vids a best kept secret kind of thing here, this is the good stuff. Thanks for it, helps me with whether I want one or not. And I do....
