I'm guessing this is a 'side oiling' FE block which would likely explain the lack of oil splashing from the galleys. Most engines send the oil to the top of the engine (ie the rockers ) first then let it pass down to the main bearings, side oilers send most of it to the main bearings first then a small amount goes to the valve train.
Just bought a 67 LTD with a 390. I'm gonna put the 390 in a 59 Rat Rod T-bird. I've been told that you need to have the valve seats hardened otherwise they will burn up with todays gas. Can any tell me if that is accurate for a 1967 390, 315hp, 4 barrell. thx!
nice man! I didn't even know I can start a car with out those covers there. Let me ask you sth, When I change them for chrom-flamon-sth... Do they start this sound like a popcorn? (you know what I mean?) I got Impala 64' ,283 CID.
Dude, amazing project! If you don't mind some advice though. Anytime you're doing a freshly built engine start up, always have a big, (charged beyong belief) 24 series battery hooked up. Why? Well in the video I hear the battery running down. And since the new motor should be tighter than a June bride, you want a strong battery to spin that 390 (probably an (s) motor) over as fast as possible. Just my opinion! Don't even let that motor hear a car with a low battery try to start!
@charlie4814 It's highly not recommended. You're right by your original assumption...Keep them on. Most engines will make a huge mess and possibly catch fire.....Oil squirting everywhere. Still here, trash and junk flying around in the shop and outside can get into that engine. If I had an engine like that it damn sure wouldn't be taken advantage of like this.
@pwkid Standard Ford Rocker Arm setup on the FE engine family. Oiling is done through one of the rocker shafts stands. I couldn't easily tell but it looks like it has the adjustable rocker arms too for valve lash adjustment. Typical everyday 336,352,360,361,390,391,406,410,427,428 FE Series motor.
