Glad there was music to this upload, but the captions/subtitles that you can't get rid of --which I think are Spanish-- block out much of the dialogue frames.
We Will Find a Pristine Copy of The Young Rajah With Sound. It Shall Be. Blessings to Rudy and Natacha Wherever Their Souls Be. What a Fascinating Couple They Were.
I read a book about this scandal against Roscoe. The book implied that he was set up because he was making SO much money that the production company did this to get him out of the contract. They girl had an illegal abortion and she died in that room, and they pinned a bunch of lies on Roscoe. These people set up the party, brought all the alcohol, brought a phonograph to get everyone dancing, and showed up with this girl who was a known troublemaker. Roscoe could see that she was in trouble and put her on the bed, and when she died, the pinned it all on him.
Gloria Swanson was Paramount's original 'flapper' girl in the early 20's (note the bob hairdo), and became a big star because of it. But the sound era wasn't kind to her until she got to chew the scenery big-time in 1950's "Sunset Boulevard".
Most studios, including Fox, had moved their primary facilities to Hollywood by 1927, when this film was made. Paramount kept studios in New York and Hollywood, and others rented studios when they wasted to shoot back East; some of which are still in use today. George O'Brien, making this and the Oscar-winning "Sunrise" the same year.
Musical accompaniment is all Wrong...much too Jazzy for a film produced in 1912 ! And the music doesnt always match the Action. I watched landmark film because I recently purchased a 107 yr old portrait of leading lady D. Bernard, who launched her Biograph film career in 1908! One of the earliest of film actresses, she slightly predates even Mary Pickford and Blanche Sweet, whose telegraph - railway adventure, The Lonedale Operator (1911) is a companion piece. After leaving Biograph, Bernard worked for several other production companies including William Fox studios, where she had her own starring vehicles. It's a shame she's completely forgotten except for this Historic Griffith - Biograph short.
Charles Emmett Mack has a quirky yet expressive face in the movie, In fact his unique face grabs the screen. Both Charles Emmett Mack and Pola Negri had strong expressive faces. Too bad Charles Emmett Mack died in a horrible car accident in 1927.
While I understand this is a reconstruction, where are the pictures of Rudolph in the beautiful East Indian costumes designed by Natasha, especially of him reclining in the boat? They can’t just have been publicity stills. I think there must be more of the storyline missing…
Silent film speed is being reproduced at sound speed. Best set the playback to .75 (in Settings) and even that is a little too fast. Always good to see Stan Laurel before or during his L&H years.
