Great Video mate! You deserve more subs. I've just spent the last months attempting to fix 3 SMS2's. These are what another repairer couldn't get working. What a nightmare. All chips swapped/replaced, capacitors checked/replaced, even checked the ceramics! (Yes you can get bad ceramics too - I had one previous SMS which has a bad ceramic on the video ram bus). Turned out that all 3 had one of two corroded traces. I didn't find this out until I got the oscilloscope out and checked all the I/Os. A couple of bodge wires and they worked! One tip though, if you go to the trouble of removing ICs, definitely put a socket in. Saves time later, assuming you're keeping it.
Hey! Does cutting that first trace alone turn the console into 60HZ, or is there any other steps needed? If it does, I'll probably just do that, and later on if I want to use the Sega CD I'll just finish the mod or use another console or whatever.
Pretty much, yeah. :) I added the switch because I have a few games that won't launch in 60Hz. For those I start the console in 50Hz and once the Sega logo is gone, I switch it to 60Hz. I hope this adds some context. If you want a 60Hz-only console, then yes, all you would need to do is cut that one trace. :)
Ive just done this mod and ive noticed that i can still get colour on Composite and RF video and checking the Signals the TV is Registering it still says PAL although The games definitely Run quicker Can anyone explain to me how Im gettint colour on Composite as it should be Impossible. Thanks
That's interesting. I know that the Mega Drive will display in black and white through composite/RF in 60Hz, so I don't know if it happens with other consoles too. The fact your TV says it's PAL though, I don't know why. I hope the mod is a success otherwise.
This was my first time seeing this valuable item, which is rarely distributed in Japan. It cost 80,000 Japanese yen at the time, so it wouldn't sell. It was great to see something so rare.
My older Brother saved up for this, making it the first console in our family home. We never had the car racing game, but a few on the sport cartridge was ok.
It was a very lucky find on Facebook Marketplace. Got a notification that a SNES was put up for sale and I went curious, so I had a look, scrolled through the pictures and there it was... Lots of phone calls later, it was considered mine. Super happy. Keep looking, they turn up every now and then. I have 'saved' searches on eBay that alert me for certain key words.
I think the vertical lines means the screen needs to be replaced, unfortunately. The blank screen could be a screen problem too, or something more serious that I'm not sure about. Does the one with the blank screen have sound?
I have a mega drive which I tried to pry open the expansion port open with a knife, and I ended up scratching the motherboard, and the mega drive would only show a black screen. :(
Aw, man. That sucks. Those expansion covers can be unnecessarily difficult to open. Trick is to push down and pull at the same time. Sounds like trace damage, which is fixable.
That's an idea... I'll have to find myself a real FM Unit for the Mark III, or source that FM mod for the SMS. Do you know if the audio quality differs between different SMS/SG-1000 models?
@@JoystickDivision I haven't heard of any audio discrepancies between different units, but I do know the PowerBase Mini FM sounds a little bit different to the internal FM mod on a Master System.
If only it were that simple... For early PAL games, yes, that is the case. But later games will recognise that they're trying to be played in a 60Hz machine and say 'umm, excuse me?' so you have to start the console in 50Hz mode, then when the SEGA logo pops up you can switch it over to 60Hz. However, some later PAL games have had their speed adjusted, so you can get full 60Hz speed in 50Hz. Putting the console in 60Hz for these games will have the game running too fast. Makes it kind of fun for games like Mortal Kombat 3 though. I hope I explained this well.
I just realised that we're talking about the Master System and not the Mega Drive... I don't know if what I said applies here. I have a feeling that it'll be a lot easier to deal with and more akin to what you suggested.
Stick man be groovin! Thanks for putting this video together. I think you're the only one who did an in-depth review on the audio of the Mega SG. Also 5:32 This is what I wanted to hear!
I found that there's even a few games that either get really weird or don't work at all at 60 Hz. Seems to be more common with European-developed games which makes sense since they were developed for 50 Hz.
Congratulations! Now was this actually an anniversary video or just a teaser for the next video. OR are you doing the new Hollywood thing of making a teaser for a trailer for a movie that we won’t see for 5 years… Come to think of it, I’d watch a Joystick Division movie. Well a movie length video. Wait! Isn’t that what let’s plays are!? Is this a backwards way to announce a new/remastered let’s play series. Wow This comment was a trip.
Glad this got re-uploaded, it helped me open my SC-3000 when the original video was posted. I'm working on a clone of the SG-1000, and as part of the blog entry about it I'd like to have a picture of an SF-7000 for illustration. May I please use a screengrab from this video (with credit) when that entry eventually gets posted?
Thanks for the compliments. :) I've finally provided a link to the sticker image, I hope it works: drive.google.com/file/d/1vyH6StAZK4PmQjmzQqYmeNL0aOjocs6j/view?usp=sharing
I haven't done a commission before, but I'm open to the idea. As long as it's simple like the mod in this old video and something I have 100% confidence in doing successfully, I might consider it.
Hey. I might be open to this, it just depends on the console and what mod you'd want done. I'd be happy to help out if it's something I'm really confident with. Remember, what I upload as videos are usually successful attempts.
