For everyone questioning this... You must meet with a probation for a pre sentence report before a judge can sentence you. Pre sentence reports are mandatory at least in the state of N.Y., (where im from). I know because ive been through this. The pre-sentence report essentially helps the judge issue an appropriate sentence, as it is a legal document that assesses the persons background and what type of sentence is appropriate. Example: if someone is a drug addict, they may send this person to recieve treatment as part of his sentence.
