So this plant is really cool, i have one im bonsaing and the leaves get super pointy with pruning. These things branch back better then microcarpa and mine are under 500 watt grow lights they handle sun well you may find the leaves burn but only because they grew for shade, it adjusts and grows leaves for the sun. They get huge dude like 50 feet tall. You shouldnt take advice from plant woman wine moms, get your info from actual botany lovers.

What is the best way to propagate mallow? seeds or cuttings and what time of year is best? I'm in Az and there is a stretch of Highway from Mesa to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior Az.that was hydroseeded with a variety of Mallow species and it is stunning in the spring. I have been driving the 40 miles or so from my home in N. Phoenix to try and get seeds, cuttings even small plant starts with very little success. I usually try in the spring but this year I'm going to try the fall for cuttings or small starts. I would rather try cuttings but that is new to me. Appreciate your help. thx.

i wonder. is this the species that deters mosquitos ?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 6 дней назад
@@flamingstag2381 the citronella pelargonium is the one that supposedly deters mosquitoes. This one (rose pelargonium) looks the same, but smells like roses instead of citronella. It probably has a similar effect on mosquitoes. I feel like even with the citronella variety, you probably have to be sitting right next to it for it to keep the mosquitos away. Mosquitos are very determined little insects. I think that the outdoor citronella candles are more effective at deterring them. This rose scented variety is a wonderful smelling plant though. If you cut a handful of branches, bring them indoors and put in flower vase, they smell really nice🍃. If you mix them into a bundle of non scented roses from the store, it makes it seem like they are fragrant with the rose pelargoniums🍃.

We have this in Oregon but everyone tells me that it rots in winter west of the Cascades. Maybe I could grow it in a pot?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves Месяц назад
Hi Haley, I could totally see that happening in Oregon. This is a total desert plant. I have it growing in a southern exposure here in Northern California (a non-desert area) and it's growing well; I have sandy/sandy loam soil and I have it on a slight slope so the water drains well where I have it planted. We don't have snow in my area though; I don't know if you have snow and/or if that that is what's rotting this plant (S. dorrii). Maybe try growing two of this plant; one in a southern exposure on a slope with amended soil to improve drainage, planted in the landscape and plant another one in a pot. Worst thing that could happen is that they don't like the weather and don't make it, but it could be worth a try. If you get snow, I could see that being an issue. As long as it has good sun exposure and air flow, even with heavy winter rains, I think this plant should be fine; mine is fine. I actually have two; one in full sun and the other in part sun....it really does better in the full sun exposure. We rarely if ever reach freezing here too, dunno if that's an issue where you are. I hope this helps.

@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 2 месяца назад
Thank you :-). I would say yes to that. I would think that a younger plant would give you more ability to shape it to this smaller size. I'd use electric hedging clippers; they look like little prongs that vibrate back and forth while pruning, almost like you're giving a haircut. Just prune it a couple times a year to maintain the ideal shape and size. I will naturally grow more like a disk shape. Make sure not to prune more than 1/3rd of the plant in a single session and try not to prune past foliage (leaves) growth (as you would lavender)...essentially don't cut past the leaves so much, it does need the leaves (needle like) to photosynthesize, especially in the heat of the summer. It blooms in the winter/spring here in California, so if you want the flowers, I'd hold off on any pruning in the winter/spring. I hope this helps :-)!

Hi Jason my aloe berbarae is very yellow. I just moved to this place and I’m just not sure what to do to improve its condition . I live in Yorba Linda close to carbon canyon. This tree is in full sun all the time, it is about 7ft tall, and it has a lot of black spots too. Does it need to be treated just like a regular aloe Vera plant? I live in a mobile home park, and around the lake here there are several of these trees that are doing well out in the sun, and a few don’t. Thanks, I’m Marci
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 2 месяца назад
Hi Marci, sorry to hear that your Aloe barberae sounds like it's a bit stressed. I'd suggest checking the soil a couple times a week to make sure that the roots are healthy. The soil should be almost dry in between waterings. Sometimes yellowing and blackspot are from too much water or even too much sun. Also, a move can be stressful for plants; they get used to a certain spot, then if moved in the middle of the summer, it can stress the plant out as it has to adapt to a new environment in an already intense (intense heat) season of the year. I'd give it some time; for now, I'd move it into just a little less sun than it's currently getting; I'd move it to 'sun or part sun' (no more full sun for now). As the weather cools in the fall, you can move it back to that full sun spot, if that that spot is more ideal for the plant to be. I think it may just need a milder heat location. If you haven't fed your plant in a while, try using a cactus succulent fertilizer. Yellowing leaves can also be a sign of nitrogen deficiency. As far as the black spots, I don't have the most experience dealing with that on Aloe (I've seen it, I just have avoided buying it), but I've dealt with black spot on other plants. Try spraying it gently with a neem oil spray (they have some anti fungal properties). You can also consider using an organic copper fungicide to suppress the black spot fungus as well. If any leaves are so unsightly with black spot that you think the plant would look better off without, remove a couple or so. Severely damaged leaves don't recover; most leaves don't recover. Thankfully new leaves eventually replace the old leaves. Remember to prune off spent flower spikes as well, this will help keep your aloe healthy and vibrant. I hope this helps :-).

Can you advise about cutting it back before winter in UK?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 2 месяца назад
This plant is often referred to as a biennial, lasting two years, but I think that sometimes they may live a little longer, especially if you prune off the spent flower spikes down to the base of the plant as soon as the flowers are finished. This can encourage the plant not to go to seed or die after going to seed. Always prune the flower spikes down to the base of the plant as soon as they are finished. If it puts up more flowers, do the same again. This is how you would prune it back before winter or at any time. I hope this helps 🌿

Hi Mark, cut this plant back by 1/3rd in the fall when the blooms are spent (whichever is first). Then in late fall, prune down to 1-1.5 feet tall. This should give it a more compact form for the next season. I hope this helps🌿🙂

@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 2 месяца назад
They sound like large established plants. There’s always a level of risk when moving plants. I’d buy a small new one to relocate. If you absolutely want to give it a try with moving the plants, cut them back by about 1/3rd now. Then in early fall, once the weather has cooled a little, try digging them up and getting as much of the root ball as you can. Plant in desired spot and make sure that the base of the plant (crown) is little above the soil level (on a little mound) as it will sink a little as it establishes. I hope this helps 🌿🙂

Why does it look pink in some videos, red, brownish red in other videos?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 3 месяца назад
I think it’s probably the lighting. The color of ‘Fragrant Cloud’ is highly radiant and rich in color. The sun really brings out its color; I’d say that does to that, it can look like a much different hue in the shade. I know that as the flower ages/blooms out, the color does change perhaps looking a smidge more pink in the right lighting. I don’t know what the roses look like in other videos, but there is of course the chance they may have a mislabeled rose. I think it’s more likely the lighting and different stages of bloom, maybe even the camera used that makes it look the different colors. In real life, it’s very radiant coral. Especially just as it opens, it’s this rich deep electric coral color🌿

I’m not sure of the problem, but lack of soil drainage (clay) or lack of sunlight are often the problem. If you want to plant it again, I’d try early fall, once the weather has cooled a bit. Plant it where it will get full sun Anna make sure to plant it a couple inches above soil level, cover the roots with soil, but don’t bury the crown (base) of the plant. Try adding a little gypsum and humic acid to the soil if you have any; that may help too. I hope this helps 🌿

My pelargonium ended up separating out as it grew - in some cases leaving a big gap in the middle of the plant (many branches breaking away from the center), losing the rounded look. Any. idea why this happened?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 месяца назад
Maybe not enough sunlight and/or too much water. A good amount of sunlight (sun to full sun) usually is enough to help a plant grow more compact and prevent it from growing in a sprawling way. Sometimes if the soil doesn’t drain well and/or it gets too much water (or the lack of drainage causes too much water to pool at bottom of plant) the plant can grow sprawly and away from center. It could even just be planted too deep in the soil. When planting, most plants should be planted a couple inches above the soil line, because after being planted, the plant sinks as it settle in over the course of a few months to a year. If the crown of the plant is below the soil level, it can cause rot at the base. I think the issue may be mostly due to it needing more sunlight. I think this plant tends to grow less compact if not enough sunlight. Pruning can help with this. Also moving it to a location with more sunlight can help. I hope this helps 🌿.

Hello, how do you know when seeds are ready to harvest? I am waiting to prune until then.
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 месяца назад
I'd say about 2 weeks after flowers are finished blooming (at least most of the flowers). The part of the spike that has stopped blooming, that is when the seed is really developing; just give it a couple weeks. But, if you start to see birds eating the seeds, skip straight to harvest immediately. Unless you want to feed the birds with the seed. I usually find that if birds start eating the seeds, they are definitely ready. I usually wait for most of the flowers to finish blooming; once I see that, I wait a couple weeks and then harvest. I hope this helps. :-)

@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 месяца назад
Hi there, your plant should be alright. You may have cut the spikes a little early, but that's actually totally fine, unless you were planning on harvesting the spikes for seed collection (which you could still do, you may just have less viable seed). If you wanted viable seed, you'd want to wait a bit until the blooms have 'just about' completely stopped for a couple of weeks; this would give the seeds more time to mature on the plant before harvest. If you see birds start to eat the seed and you plan to harvest seed, just harvest it right away as soon as you see that happen. Salvia apiana is hemaphroditic - containing both male and female flower parts, so both of your plants are actually hermaphroditic (like most, possibly all Salvia). Their cross pollination may increase your seed yield, being that you have 2 of them near each other, but that's the only difference in it's behavior if any. If it gets hotter (which I imagine it will in AZ), you may want to increase the irrigation a little bit to maybe 3 days a week, or just an every other day schedule for the first two years during the summer. There are a lot of factors that influence this though...if the two days that you water are very deep watering, maybe you can stick to that schedule, just keep an eye on them. In many parts of California, this plant is able to grow on it's own, but for the average home gardener, I'd give it water at least during hot summer weather for at least the first couple years, especially since they are in full sun (which is perfect, as that is what they want). I'd suggest a light layer of small wood chip mulch underneath the plant to help the soil there retain water, just don not bury the crown of your plant. The crown is the bottom stem that comes out of the ground; it's the base of the plant. All of this advice is considering that you have them planted in the ground. If you have them planted in containers, they will need a little more water (granted they are established already in those containers) and I'd move them into 'sun to part sun' if they are in containers. They are more resilient against the summer heat when they are established in the ground. Make sure the soil drains well and that water doesn't pool at the base of the plant. I hope this helps you keep your wonderful Salvia apiana's thriving and happy. I hope this helps.
