Good evening Mark. Thank you for this Episode. Hope you're well. I know this Episode is about a year old, but I just came across this brilliantly and eloquent guidance. You're correct and I had no idea of how to use my ERV incorrectly as the previous owners did not leave the manual. I did download the vänEE manual, but it's confusing. I wonder if you can do a video for the ERV. I was wondering if you can also guide us on how to replace a noisy motor. Thanking you for this episode as well as in advance for any new information you can provide on my request. God bless.

Great video! What temp/humidity do we stop running it at? In Minnesota we have winters that are sub zero, but summer can be 90 and 98% humidity. When should I turn it off and then back on again? My dial on the humidistat goes to 80 degrees Fahrenheit
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726

I recommend that you operate your HRV to control humidity when the temperatures get below freezing and turn it off when the temperature goes above. I operate a dehumidifier set to 35% year round that controls the humidity during the warmer months.

How does the bathroom control work.
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 Месяц назад
There should be one of three styles. 1) A standard light type switch 2) A button switch 3) A multi-button timer switch. Once activated, it turns on the HRV then sends a signal to turn on the furnace fan. The exhaust point in the bathroom should be on the top of one of the interior walls.

The wall control in your thumbnail is the one we have. Our system didn't come with a manual we purchased the house with the HRV already installed. Can you run through how to use that specific controller ? I've tried to find it on line with no success.
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 3 месяца назад
The dial is to adjust the relative humidity and the min/max/intermittent is to set the ventilation. As discussed in the video, I find it easier to use a digital humidity gauge.

Other than vermiculite in the attic which is contaminated with asbestos…Is there ever any pure or raw loose fill asbestos used as loose fill attic insulation?
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 7 месяцев назад
No, but you may find sodium bicarbonate in the Attic which a lot of people think is asbestos. If you see a white powder throughout your attic it is likely that sometime in the past somebody has put sodium bicarbonate AKA baking soda in the Attic to remove musty smells and remove moisture. Hope this answers your question.

Great video! Would you say every house before 1990 has some sort of asbestos?
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 8 месяцев назад
Not necessarily. Asbestos was banned here in 1979 but any flooring that was sold in the '80s could have contained asbestos as inventory in flooring companies wasn't required to be destroyed. Testing of materials in that time period is always best.

It sounds like the drain may have gotten plugged. It is recommended to remove and clean all interior surfaces with vinegar then follow up with a soap and water mixture. The filters should be discarded and replaced and the core should be properly cleaned.

@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
What type of main controller do you have? If you have the same one in the video with the dial, try turning the dial and listening for the click. The unit should come on and run continuously when it is set to below the click and off when above the click. If you have a different controller with humidity displayed it is possible that your unit may be faulty or that your controller is set to continuous operation. Hope that helps, good luck.

Regarding plaster - isn’t there a timeframe where the plaster was more likely to contain asbestos? I’ve read that prior to the 1920s plaster used horse hair before switching to asbestos fibers. Thanks!
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
Horse hair is found in the tan plaster material where asbestos fibers are rarely found. Asbestos fibers are normally found in the skim coat that covers the tan plaster and was used from the 1930s up until drywall replaced plaster. Asbestos fibers were used in drywall joint compound up until it was banned in around 1979.

A fan vent is never recommended. Insulating an unheated garage may lead to mold too. In fact the mold is from the garage not having good ventilation that’s all. If it had ventilation, you wouldn’t be able to heat it with your car
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
Yes this is correct, we recommend the installation of a humidity controlled (Humidex) exhaust ventilation system in all newer garages that are built more airtight than they were in the past.

@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
My question to you is why would you have bad mouldy air in your basement or crawl space? If you have a crawl space It should either be vented outside and the floor be insulated or it should be treated as any living space in your home so it does not become bad mouldy/stale air.

@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
If you are questioning whether the HRV has been cleaned I would definitely inquire to your landlord about cleaning it as this should be done at least annually, every 3 to 4 months for the filters. Monitor your humidity level in the apartment and it should be between 30% and 50%, closer to 30% during freezing outdoor temperatures. You may need to use a dehumidifier if you noticed heavy condensation on Windows during sub freezing temperatures. Hope that helps.

@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
I have a dehumidifier set to 35% humidity and training directly into a floor drain. My humidity at most gets to 45% relative humidity. If your humidity remains between 30 and 35%, you should not have any issues with the house. If you find that it is too dry for breathing or your skin, you can use a humidifier but make sure you monitor the humidity and not exceed 50%. Of course it is recommended to keep your humidity between 30% and 50% during the subfreezing temperatures. Hope that helps, take care.

Vermiculite itself is not dangerous - only if asbestos has been added (as it often was, but not always...)
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
Asbestos was not added to vermiculite it was found in certain mine where vermiculite was extracted. A common mine wear asbestos contaminated vermiculite was extracted from was in Libby Montana. This raw vermiculite was transported to a manufacturing facility in Winnipeg Manitoba and was processed into a name brand called Zonolite. During the processing of the raw material asbestos was released. You can purchase vermiculite today that was mind at a non-asbestos contaminated mines, this vermiculite is often sold at nurseries for use in gardens and potted plants.

we just got one less than 2 weeks ago and its already got black mold in the water bucket. this is concerning. is it normal? thanks!
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726 9 месяцев назад
This often happens when draining water directly into the drawer. Your user's manual likely recommends that the bucket be cleaned out regularly to prevent it from occurring. I always recommend that the best course of action is to use a drain hose that drains the water directly out of the unit and into a floor drain without entering the drawer. Mould growth after 2 weeks is concerning. I would recommend that you get mould air sampling as you may have elevated levels that promoted mould growth.

Yes, vinyl sheet flooring often contained asbestos fibers. This flooring installed into buildings up until 1990 would be suspect. Asbestos was banned in 1979 but flooring stores were not forced to destroy their inventory so vinyl sheet flooring sold in the 1980s would also be suspected of containing asbestos fibers.

Did they always use asbestos in building, and did they always use it in drywall, so is it in drywall in every building from 1930 to 1990, or in some
@breatheeasyecosolutions4726
It was only used in some buildings and material. It may not be in all materials but it's very likely that it is in some materials in older houses prior to 1980. Houses built between 1980 and 1990 have more of a concern with manufactured products like vinyl sheet flooring as suppliers sold their older inventory.

Hi JohnnyDom, Unfortunately there is still a lack of education about the many possible uses of asbestos all around the world. Whether in floors, screeds and leveling compounds, electrical installations, in tile adhesives and joint compounds, the mastic of windows and doors, as well as in many other materials in and around the house - there are countless possible areas of application of asbestos. Particularly in the case of renovation and refurbishment work, the following therefore applies: Exercise the greatest caution and play it safe! Even a small material sample is sufficient to determine in a professional test procedure whether a suspicious material contains asbestos. If the commissioned analysis confirms the suspicion of asbestos, have any work on it carried out exclusively by service providers with the necessary certificate of competence. This is the only way you can be sure that there will be no accidental contamination of your living space or clothing with asbestos fibers. If you want to know more about possible locations of asbestos in your home, feel free to visit our interactive asbestos house: www.crb-gmbh.com/en/interactive-graphic Stay healthy!
