I took some time to train this. They have to learn to jump and stop suddenly in the van. Please take your time...and congratulations on getting your new mini. :-)
It's truly wonderful to see not only the amazing variety of behaviors, but also the bright spirit that accompanies the interactions. Inspirational and instructional.
Actually, the process of training using food reinforcers can go pretty quickly. In this little dance there were about 6 separate behaviors trained before they were put together in this sequence.
Great info. I have a little mini that doesn't understand how to take from a flat hand and searches thumb, side of hand, etc. looking for treat instead of the flat palm. I will try this technique.
Taking treats out of a person's hand gently is a learned behavior just like any behavior on the planet. In some of the more difficult cases I actually let them learn using a small bucket and then I gradually introduce my hand. Keep me posted on how it's going and thank you for your feedback.
Hi I just binge watched all your videos and they are great. I have a 13 year old welsh mare and she really enjoys ground work and liberty. And im constantly looking for new things to teach her could you please do a tutorial on how to teach this? Thank you so much!
Talia, thanks for your comment. I would love to scrape together some time to do some tutorials. Maybe after the holidays. I do have ongoing online teaching groups.
Thanks, love the video,, great song, great voice. My kitty was locked inside a pole barn 24hrs a day for 3yrs because she had no claws. She is home with us now. She is so lovable and plays like a kitten
Thank you Peggy Hogan for sharing this clip. It makes me so happy to see a human and a horse finding such simple methods to communicate and co-operate with each other. Of course McKee is no ordinary horse and Peggy is no ordinary human - but what they teach can be replicated by anyone who has the will to try. Wonderful.
Wow! Thanks for sharing the video. Coincidentally we have used a couple of drops of lavender essential oils on rags that were stuck in zip-lock bags tucked in various locations for mounted scent detection targeting, but we never thought of using mats. Brilliant!
I taught McKee this behavior "just because" I wanted to show how many varied behaviors can be taught using a marker and a food reinforcer. Having said that, I've wanted to go back and add more variety to this behavior. Suggestions on which way to take it based on your experience?
What a refreshing take on this... I have a mini mare that I'm going to start introducing driving to. I'll avidly look into your other videos for general Clicker training. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! I did make an additional video of part two. The point is we really can use so many of our daily activities to use in our training, and combined with the clicker/reinforcement it can be so enjoyable for the horse. Thank you again. This is one of the best training videos I've seen! It is extremely positive and the steps taken insure that the pony will be comfortable in his new job. Major props- you are an outstanding clicker trainer and your work is fantastic!
+EternalFreewill You are very kind. I am so glad to see people embracing this amazing form of training. I'm also glad to say I feel I've advanced in my techniques since I filmed this. Thank you again for your kind words. --Peggy Hogan
