Hi, I'm Frank Minghella. I am an obsessive creative and proud of it : )
I like to think that my enthusiasm for all things creative spills out in my photography and Lightroom classes. I teach others to unleash their inner creativity at the Perfect Photo Company in the UK. My one day classes are a lot of fun and I make learning to be creative with photography fun and easy to follow.
All 14 modules of Mm DSLR and Mirrorless Course can be found on Skillshare. Take a look here: skl.sh/2P7l6N6
I am lucky to have made a lot of friends along the way as well as some fabulous new photographers.
I am available for 1-1 sessions here in Liverpool. Why not book a day, I would love to help you progress with your creative journey.
Thank you for this. I was so frustrated with getting even margins on a Canon Pixma Pro 100, I finally gave up, but lately I have been reconsidering printing at home again. This video was fantastic for setting up printing an A4 size print out. I am curious how you would go about setting the job up for a 12" x 16" print so that it would fit in the 20" x 16" matte frame from Ikea.
I would add for street photography, try the dr400 extended dynamic range mode. The dr400 mode, in short, distributes the exposure more evenly thru the exposure of the images, removing the necessity of underexposing for highlights. It does this by requiring you to shoot at iso 640 or higher. This allows the camera to underexpose the hi lights of an image while boosting the mid tones and shadows…. basically what you eventually do in post if you underexposed your images. It does all of these calculations prior to the analog to digital conversion, so it works in RAW! At long last, Lightroom help that actually helps! Looking forward to viewing all of these modules as my winter project is to clean up Lighroom and have it be useful going forward. I found this material on Christmas Day (2023) and it's best present I opened! Thank you, thank you.
I've used RU-vid for many years to help improve my understanding, and knowledge, of digital photographt in my quest to become a better amateur photograher. I've only recently come across your LrC videos and I really wish I had found them much earlier - your steady delivery, video workflow, technical content and superb graphics are the best that I have come across in my experience (and that includes the great Scott Kelby!). Please keep it up and I look forward to watching your new content when it becomes available.
I need to store my Lightroom catalog on a new drive as my 1TB local system drive is running out of space. I tried running the catalog from a regular internal HDD drive but Lightroom speed suffered badly - the lag I got was a pain. I am purchasing a second SSD, this time 2TB. I have considered two options, however. i) Use the new 2TB drive as my new local system drive and sharing it as my Lightroom Catalog location. Or ii) install the 2TB SSD as a 2nd local drive dedicated exclusively to the Lightroom Catalog. So existing smaller 1TB SSD is for system files only and the new 2nd drive is Lightroom Catalog only. Would there be any loss in performance having a dedicated, in this case 2nd internal SSD, for the Lightroom Catalog rather than sharing the system drive with Lightroom?
Fantastic! The nest video n graphics seen on the subject. You have made the concept so simple and logical. You made all my confusions ( especially on the catalog n folder/s) very clear. Thank you.👍👍👍
Hi and thanks. I quite often use Silver Efex Pro from the Nik Collection by DXO its pretty amazing. I have it as a plug-in inside Lightroom classic. Thanks for your comment 😀
Thank you Frank for this tutorial, I appreciate it very much and yes it would be wonderful if you would show how to add the reflection also. You are very kind.
I like your videos, and your nice black and white pictures. Very inspiring. BTW, I am wandering what is the brand of the shoulder bag at the beginning of the video.
Frank is an amazing teacher. I have taken several of his classes on Skillshare and I can honestly say he got me started. Thanks Frank. I wish I was in the uk as I would sign up
Can highly recommend Frank, whatever your level of experience Frank is a brilliant teacher. And what an amazing location full of photographic opportunities !
Great video! One question though. If you are planning on printing the image many different sizes can you just leave the resize to fit unchecked so you don't have to keep re-sizing for every different print?
What will happen to my pics if I no longer have access to Lightroom and have moved them to the lightroom catalogue and deleted them from my pictures folder on my mac hd.
It's fine to edit, but it's not street photography anymore. The difficulty of street photography is to have everything aligned in a fraction of a second, Henry Cartier Bresson called it "the decisive moment", "the moment when all the elements in a photograph come together perfectly to create a meaningful image."
I really like the crispness and tonality of your B&W images. The scenes around York Minster are particularly engaging. What film simulation settings did you use on the X100V?
Thanks for the kind comments. The X100V shoots great video, but I use a Sony A7siii If I didn't own the Sony I would happily use the Fuji. Best wishes,Frank
Great images and a beautiful place, congratulations and thanks for sharing! I use the same settings but in daylight I limit my auto ISO to 3200 and in low light I usually stick to f5.6 and limit my auto ISO to 6400. I don't know if you set such limitations too? Former musicians seem to have a special talent for capturing great images in crowded areas and yours remind me of Alan Schaller's but in a 'softer' way and with a 35mm instead of a 24mm. Anyway thanks again and have fun! Cheers!
