It could be argued that the Mongol Empire was larger than the British Empire, in the sense that the Mongols were able to directly administer all of their territory. There were vast expanses of the British Empire that likely were not, such as large swaths of northern Canada and the Arctic Archipelago, remote regions of Egypt and Sudan, and the interiors of Australia and New Guinea. If we didn't count the areas of those places then the Mongol Empire is likely bigger.
Mongold maintained their maximum size for a very short amount of time. It was impossible to manage that vast territory, and in most of their territories, their presence wasn't felt, as they may visit to collect taxes once every 5-10 years.
