However, because it is sacred, consecrated, ground, blessed by the church, which would essentially validate the purity of your soul for heaven. Being close to the church gave it protection from evil. They were also well protected, superstitiously, with things like Yew trees, believed to ward off witches and evil spirits that might seek to harm the graves and souls of those interred. But on a human level, it also meant that you could more easily visit (or remember) your ‘dearly departed’ when you went to church on a Sunday (as everyone used to do).
