As an experienced (and learning) backyard gardener, I've created this channel as a way to share what I've learned over the past 10 years. I grow mostly the typical fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, squash, peppers and melons. Being located in the southern California high desert, I face many challenges in having a home garden, but many of the tips I share can be applied wherever you are to help you with those same struggles in your garden.

You can expect videos on a variety of gardening topics, geared toward the beginner gardener. Drip irrigation, starting seeds, planting, composting, raised gardens, shade covers and wind breaks are just some of the topics I will cover. I try to keep my videos simple and straight-forward so that they will be helpful without over complicating things.

My goal is to help beginner gardeners be more successful when planting and growing a backyard garden.

This, is In The Garden

Someone has deliberately cut all my tomatoe plants. The sad soul that has done this, for whatever reasons, I will leave them to their 'karma' and spend not a second more comtemplating them... :) I am grateful to this video and for these tips! Love the smell of having them in water in my room :)

very helpful, thank you!! I set it up with flowers instead of greens and it took me a while to figure out how to reset for greens. I unplugged it and left it unplugged for a bit. I initially set the clock at the current time, not the time I wanted it to go on. so, your video helped me through both of those issues. Thank you so much!!!

Newbie here: I live in central Florida zone 9b. I have a 6 tiered stand and all the trays and pots (no lights yet) and have started planting some of my seeds. Would I be able to start my seeds on my screened back porch (no direct sun) or would it be better to do it inside? I have cats so I was afraid they might mess with my setup and pots. If I did do this on my porch would I still need the lights?

A question this my first time. Of If I put a 1/2 GPH pressure dropper does that mean that I have to have my timer set for 1 hour per day.

I tried to grow from seeds 4 types of alpine strawberries inside. They got leggy, even thou they seemed to be getting plenty of light each day inside. So I have got myself a tiny led grow light and start my new alpine red wonders and white soul strawberries. I love they work at a safe 5 volt power I can provide from a USB power source or one of my large power banks. Looking forward to seeing how it works out. These plants are very small 15cm tall and not very wide.

Can I run 2 25 psi pressure regulators to the same system at two different points via a hose line? I have a 25x25 foot space with 32 romas all watered from one regulator. I have 20 indeterminate about 5 feet away, and 20 pepper plants 5 feet from that.... I was going to run 1 regulator on each of these 3 areas, but bases on the math I should be fine with only 1... but is 3 better in a coupled system or should they be isolated by zones?

The background music detracted from the viewing experience. When the music volume went to zero, the video was pleasant to watch. Other than the music, it was a very well presented video packed with information. ( I solved the problem by putting it on mute and using the Closed Caption function to finish the video. )

Using the method of attatchig 1/4" tubing to the main1/2" line is the far superior method. It is easy to change emitters or lengthen the 1/4" tubing easily without disturbing the mianline.

@inthegarden. Can just install the 1/4” inline to main line and don’t install any emitters at all? If there is a 25psi regulator and 60 or so plants have no emitters the flow would be low correct? Then you set your timer to only water like 10-15 min a day. Will that work?
@ruthlopez6087

I just had new drip irrigation converted from sprinklers after removing my lawn and made everything into bedding areas. I put 1/2 gallon emitters on all the bedding plants since most are drought tolerant or waterwise plants that don't want much water after establishment. The irrigation guy wanted to put 1 or 2-gallon emitters on all plants. I thought I would water longer if the plants needed it. I am trying to keep water waste down since I live in California. Am I wrong?
@christinebalog4271
@christinebalog4271 Месяц назад
Can the emitters be easily pulled out of the black distribution tubing and replaced? For example, two years ago I had planted some new trees and i used 5 gph emitters, but now I would like to instead use 2 gph emitters as the trees are established. Can the 5 gph emitters be pulled out and replaced with another emitter? Or do I need to just cut that whole tubing section out and redo with new emitters that I want to use? Thanks!

Currently I have 2 rows of corn, with 20 plants in each row. I'm not sure what the best attachment to my main 1/2 line is for this. I don't want to run 40 1/4 tubes from the main line. Is the soaker line enough water?
@InTheGarden
@InTheGarden Месяц назад
I would definitely recommend using soaker hose for this. Just run it down each row and adjust the time it runs to get the right amount of water.

Thanks for this video. I too, recently received an AeroGarden as a gift and was clueless on how to proceed. I do have a question however. I’ve noticed that the root structure on all of my herbs seem to be quite full and thick. Should I consider removing the herbs from the Aero garden and planting them in a separate pot or is this something that I shouldn’t worry about? Thanks for all of your help!
@InTheGarden
@InTheGarden Месяц назад
It's really up to you. You can definitely transplant to soil if you want, but you don't have to, they should continue to grow fine in the aerogarden. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱

Hi...Do you always have 0.5inch-1inch of water in the bottom of the trays, or do you wait for the water to be all absorbed and then top up?
@InTheGarden
@InTheGarden Месяц назад
Once the seeds have sprouted, I wait until the tray is dry AND the top 1/4 to 1/2in of soil is dry.
@jxg151
@jxg151 Месяц назад
@@InTheGarden So you do not add more water to the tray (other than the initial amount) until they have sprouted?....I have been maintaining the water all the time, even before they have sprouted...Could this much moisture kill the seeds?
@jxg151
@jxg151 Месяц назад
@@InTheGarden Please confirm the answer to my follow-up question as soon as you get the chance, because the answer may help me to not have to give up on my growing attempts for the season, because the seedling hiccups have caused delays and I am sat twiddling my thumbs as to whether the improper watering may be the cause...
@InTheGarden
@InTheGarden Месяц назад
I usually don't add additional water until they have sprouted, but I don't think it would cause any issues. The seeds are at the tops of the cups and the soil will only draw up the amount of water it can hold so the amount in the tray shouldn't make a difference. I would only be concerned they haven't sprouted if it's been much longer than the germination time listed on the packets and the temperature has been kept in the correct range the whole time. Hope this helps.
