What diameter wheels are you using? It looks like maybe 80mm? And do you get any heel-strike when riding?

Thank you Mr Kallo for your very informative and amusing videos on the subject of shopping with a Brompton. If you want to do this with your Brompton you need; a rear rack, cheap as chips or a Brompton rack. Easy wheel extender, 4 63mm or 70mm (6mm bore) skate wheels, (inline or roller). The extender can be fitted so that it is 45 degrees to the frame not parallel to it. That way you rise above the suspension block. Also, there are fewer heel strikes, if any. Depending on the rack, you might have to widen the racks wheel bores for the back two wheels from 5mm to 6mm. Just use a 6mm screw to do this. Check other videos on fitting the wheels. Omni wheels are tempting but you will lose control of your new shopping trolly easily. For the long term welfare of the seat stem, it is best to push/pull the trolly with the handlebars in their upright position and the stem pushed down to the stem bracket. With the stem down the bike will not unfold. The extender will bend if you put too much weight on it. I just finished this set-up tonight and tried it out at my local Asda, no Waitrose for me. You do get some funny looks but as Brompton owners, it is a cross we have to bear. Happy Shopping

Found your comments very helpful. You answered my questions as to: 1. whether the handlebar or the seat was better as a handle; and 2. could the 5mm holes in older models be simply drilled out to 6mm. Thanks!
@slicedpage
@slicedpage Год назад
@@farhorizons3901 1. Using the seat can potentially bend the stem or loosen it. I use the handlebars. 2. Yes 5 into 6 does go just do it slowly. I have been using this system for a while and it still works well. However, I did find that where the skate wheel screws into the extender, the part it screws into can become unscrewed. By sheer chance, I arrived home and lifted my Brom up some steps and looked behind to see one wheel on the ground. It was easily reattached but when I get time I'll use plumbers tape on the threads to make sure that it does not happen again.

Meh, I think the way shown in the video is the way to go. I tried the handlebar method and it just made me look like a homeless goof who can't steer at all, instead of a guy cooly carrying things on a thing that looks like it was designed to carry things. And I stopped worrying about seat stems and sleeves ever since I got a 31.8mm seatpost clamp. Sure, it'll take me an extra 30 seconds to completely fold/unfold, but I've found I rarely, if ever, need to fold the bike completely. I can't even remember the last time I had the seatpost down all the way, actually. I do have omni wheels but I regretted them almost immediately. Those things are LOUD. I figure I'll replace one pair with whatever comes with the Easy-Wheel Extender (not sure which brand to buy or where to buy from), and I'll replace the other pair with the official Brompton Advance Roller Wheel Pair... not that I know what makes those wheels more "advanced" than the stock wheels.

@@triple_lei It has been some time since I wrote my first post here and since then I have been using the seat post instead of the handlebars. You are right it is better. I have also bought pedal extenders to cut down the number of heal strikes and they work. Also to save some cash with a bag I bought Brompton bag adapters from ebay for only 9.99 so I can use my own bag instead of paying over the odds for a Brompton one.

My concern is the stress this could put on the seat pillar. Any thoughts on this? I too use my Brompton as a shopping trolley, but for me it is the handlebars that remain unfolded and which I use to guide the bike (this also means no danger of the bike unfolding). Stress on the seat pillar in my case would be considerable as I put a *_lot_* of weight into the bag (a T-Bag). Another advantage of doing this from the handlebars is that you can also suspend a large carrier bag on each end of the handlebars, thus further increasing the shopping load capacity (I put the lighter stuff in the carrier bags and the heavier stuff in the T-Bag).
@benwhite3227
@benwhite3227 2 года назад
I wouldn’t worry about it. Riding the bike puts a lot more stress on the seat pillar.
@Muddy283
@Muddy283 2 года назад
@@benwhite3227 When cycling, all the stress of the weight of the rider bears vertically downwards, which the seat column and tube are designed for. When shopping, my T-bag plus plastic carrier bags suspended from each side of the handlebar can carry anything up to 25 to 30kg. Quite apart from whether it would be feasible to wheel my Brompton at the angle in the video with so much weight bearing at the front, the considerable stress on the seat pillar would be coming from a completely different angle, which I suspect it is not designed for. Undoubtedly this works for David Kallo, the creator of this video (presumably his bag carries considerabloy less weight than mine), but I have serious reservations whether it would work in my situation. Incidentally, I would be grateful for any feedback on this question from David himself. Added to which - and it seems to me this is *very* important - I believe the place where the horizontal part of the frame meets the seat column is mechanically the weakest point of the Brompton, and this would presumably be precisely the place bearing all the stress when conducting this manoeuvre.

When the bike is folded, the larger back skate wheels creat an angle between the metal bottom rack and the flooring...Which makes the seat lean back further to your comfort when pushing it along... This will make the seat easier to pull further back also.
@mfabian1963
@mfabian1963 3 года назад
Why do you use the big skate wheels at the rear of the rack? You mostly roll it on the wheels close to the suspension block. Are the skate wheels mostly for getting easier up a step?

how to make the folds do not come apart if the seatpost position is that high??? Please give the tips
@davidkallo1366
@davidkallo1366 3 года назад
Having heavy front bag on top does play it's part in forcing the plastic clip between the folded wheels to become stronger, with its extra weight. The bike will then keep together even more without the bag too, due to the clip adapting its position.
