I have question maybe you can help me out or anyone reading this.. I have 1979 in line 6 Mariner when I attempt to start the motor starter engage to flywheel moves clockwise (normal) rotation I believe, but has soon it fires up it Switch’s rotation to counter clockwise what would cause this?
i also rebuilt my fuel pump and that made a huge difference as the diaphragm was old and very loose so the vacuum pressure didn't move the diaphragm when the engine was running. It ran at idle fine but no power under load.
yeah this was great. thank you for the help. I have the same engine only mine is a 1985. I need to do all the same things to mine. This was very helpful, thank you
I have the same black max as you. There's a wire on one of the cylinder covers which I assume is some sort of ground, do you know where that hooks up to? I forgot when I rebuilt it..
Mine just did this. Found this video and we have pretty much the same engine. It would stall out at 2100 RPMs but would sometimes surge forward and jump to 4k-5k RPMs for a few seconds. It died right at the dock. Omg the cost of these parts! Thanks for putting the video up.
I made a mark on mine so it would go back on the same as it came off but....mine had a notch anyways so it didn't matter. Mark yours just to be safe, my opinion. Good luck!
@@seanwilson3945 unfortunately i took mine off replaced the stator and trigger and put the flywheel back on not thinking about it and when i tried to start it it backfired like a car does when you have the distributor 180 out so now im trying to figure out how to put it back on correctly
Hey Sean. Thanks for sharing. I also have a 1981 Mercury 150 Black Max. I recently purchased the boat and motor and just as yours several of my wires were dry rotted. As I watched your video while you were removing your flywheel you indicated you couldn't remove the nut by hand even with considerable effort. An impact wrench certainly helped. Just FYI for others you can use a wide chisel or similar piece of metal and insert it between one of the top timimg cover mounting bolts/base to hold your flywheel while removing the nut. I personally used a 1.5" wide wood chisel turned horizontal between the left timing cover mounting bracket and the flywheel gear teeth to hold mine while removing the nut with a 1/2" long handled ratchet. It works pretty well if you dont have an impact wrench. Another note: If youre only removing the stator you can mark your flywheel tona reference point and remove the 8 smaller bolts around the flywheel nut and then remove your stator. Just thought I would share this information as to possibly help someone else attempting the job. Once again thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks Ronnie for your added info! I'm sure it will help someone who runs these motors and encounters these problems. This is one of the reasons I love RU-vid
Thanks for sharing these videos, I'm putting a new CDI engineering trigger on my Mariner 150 for the same reason.... It seems they all suffer with decomposing wiring harnesses.
Appreciate the videos... been working thru my '83 Merc 150 XR2. Ran great until the middle of the day, then bogged hard... could still coax it to full throttle here and there, but hole shot was gone and just rough. Getting consistent but what looks like weak spark to all my plugs. Thinking the stator or rectifier is definitely the culprit. Thanks again...
I got the same exact motor very good motor I’m planning to change the water pump/impeller and the thermostat can you tell me where I can get it And part number thank you
Yeah its somewhere in the coments where someone else asked me for links. If not, it was ordered from the cdi website but I'm pretty sure theres a link somewhere in the comments. Actually, the links are all in my first video where I am showing how to remove the stator.
@@seanwilson3945 I was looking at a boat that has this style motor and was researching and that's how I came across your video. The guy selling it has just bought a pontoon boat
@@djchopperd these are good motors BUT very temperamental. Do yourself a favor and do a compression check on all cylinders. If its any less than 120psi with more than 5psi difference, pass on it. These motors sound great and are fast but very few were taken care of sadly.
Finally got around to buying a new stator and trigger and rectifier for my 150. Is the wiring on the new jet unit stator match right up to the original one? Do you just match the colored wires
Uh....I don't really know about a jet unit. I bought a CDI unit and they all matched up BUT....take a picture of your wires BEFORE you disconnect them OR do what I did and just do 1 wire at a time to be sure. If they dont match up in color, you can easily determine which wire is for which position. Hopefully they gave you a schematic with a color code but if not, good old Google can answer your question. There is NO SHAME in taking it slow and taking pictures to look at so you get it right. Make sure when you put your flywheel back on, it goes on in the same position it came off, otherwise your timing will be off. Make marks, 1 on the flywheel and 1 on the engine to line it up after repair. This is really a easy job once you get through it one time. Good luck!
Sean Wilson hey Sean just a quick update , I started tearing into my 150 last night. Flywheel came right off with puller. Got stater off, trigger off and rectifier off got all the new ones on and wired. Half of the old stator wires just crumbled and fell apart and wire exposed through the insulation. All the colors matched up. Now just gotta dig the boat of of barn and try starting it and hopefully it works I appreciate all your help definitely wouldn’t have done this if I didn’t come across your video
These are the parts numbers that were compatable with my motor. Hope it helps. Good luck. JETUNIT Genuine outboard 9 amp Stator assy Maganet Coil for Mercury 6 cyl 174-5456 398-5454A2 398-5454A6
Thanks I thought I would need to pull the fly wheel to use engine lift. Watched your vid and found the fly wheel puller is treaded on outside and can be used along with the engine lift ring to lift engine to replace the steering cables. So, different project but your vid helped to see how to lift engine. Thanks.
Yes it is normal. It's probably a little louder than other tilt n trims as well. I asked the same question, thinking mine needed to be replaced but was told it's normal. Its just the pump itself and nothing is wrong. Just make sure you check your fluid level.
It was easy to do. I probably didn't need to do it but decided to just go all out. My suggestion to you though, take yours out and matxh it up to the new before you order it. Mine was different than what the Merc website said and I had to return it for the correct one.
The flywheel doesn’t need to be pulled when only replacing the stator. If you take the bolts off that are around the fly wheel nut it will expose the bolts that hold the stator on. Just have to place the new stator in the same position that the old one come from and won’t have to retime it.
Mercury says Never remove any of the bolts from the flywheel!! Danger of flywheel coming apart . It turns 5500 to 5800 rpms. Only remove the nut. And use a flywheel puller as seen. I also don't use impact it can harm the threads . Mercury service since 1983.
I just remove my flywheel using this technique and it worked great! I did not make any marks on my flywheel when i took it off. As long as the stator goes back in the correct position the fly wheel should be fine to go back on anyway?
If your saying my mercury has a weak impeller, it does not. Most Merxury Black Max 150's piss very little while on muffs. That is do to lower water pressure. When my motor is in the lake or river, it pisses like a brand new Merc.
@@seanwilson3945 good to know cause ive had my lower unit off now inspecting my impeller 2 times now. ill trailer to the river and see what she does there!
Hey, do you mind providing a link to the puller on amazon? I have the exact same setup on mine and just to make sure I get the right one. Thanks for the video :)
Ben if you look through the comments on my first video where I explain how to remove your stator, I linked to parts and the puller tool as I answered peoples comments. I looked for the parts in my amazon account but cant find them any more. Sorry about that.
Do you remember the size of the fly wheel puller bolt size? Thanks in advanced. We are having problems with bogging as well runs good with no load. With a load runs excellent till it gets warm and starts to rev high and low constantly.
Heres a link to the puller I ordered on Amazon. It's gone up in price but waaaaaay cheaper still than a dealer cost. www.amazon.com/dp/B075R414NZ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_JLzFCb83888T0
I cant say for sure on your motor since I dont know much to begin with but on my motor, after I did my repairs, I did whats called a "link and sinc". My motor is carburated though. Just fyi. Good luck on your repairs.
Did these parts you changed fix your bogging problem? I have a mariner 150 that wont rev higher than 1200 rpm under a load but will turn 6000rpm in neutral.
Your very welcome! I hope it helps you. That's the way I've learned about my motor was learn as I go. Outboards are actually quite easy to work on and maintain once you learn the basics. Good luck and happy boating!!
I would NEVER try vice grips. I'd be too afraid of breaking my flywheel and then thats just another $300 bucks and a fee days wait to replace it. Maybe it's worked for you and I'm not gonna knock it, but it is something I'll never try lol. Especially now that I know my impact works so easy
FYI Only: The switch box:es had defective as well. Has been the key to all failure in the past - many service people forget to check them and when we change the 2 switch box :es - the engine start great now every time - this is also the cause to have STATOR failure - so my TIP is - if have START problem on the 150 HP Black Max - check the switch box:es both of them and this save you a lot of headick (replace them true long use) and less start problem for the future for sure... I also START my 150 Black Max every week to be sure is work and run true and water pump works OK as well... Good Luck out there guy's...
