At 20:25, Johnny talks about Ben Grauer at Times Square on New Year’s Eve. If it weren’t for the NYE celebration, I wouldn’t have known who the heck Grauer was. I was 11 when this aired in 1965, so by then my folks allowed me to stay up on NYE. Every NYE, Grauer was reporting from Times Square in his overly-dramatic 1940’s style voice and cadence like he was announcing the end of World War II or something really important and earth-shattering!! He was a throwback to my parents’ generation. Note Johnny rolling his eyes as he talks about Grauer, as if to imply that Grauer was a relic.
I find it confusing that in recent years they -lay the ABC News @ 11pm after part one of the primetime hours instead of after the primetime hours end like they always do.
