Great vid. We're always trying to make our campaign more gritty by raising the stakes. We're at the point where all healing spells can only be cast as rituals. We're level 7 now and nobody's died or even come close. Which takes away that feeling of fantasy danger. But, should it happen, we're constantly brainstorming on how ro deal with PC death. Those were some good suggestions. I really like the sacrifice stuff. There should be a high price to pay for cheating death. A difficult choice that really makes the party have to weigh their options.
We've never had a resurrection in our games. Most times if a character was killed there's nothing left but a sweet memory. That and we play mostly one-shots.
I’ve been toying with someone having to sacrifice HP or HD permanently to seed life back into the dead creature and possibly decreasing the difficulty of any checks or challenges for any additional sacrifices beyond the minimum
@@wizardsling yeah, I like that - I had also considered having to permanently donate a death save to seed life instead - of course, one could offer the players a choice between the options as part of the ritual - “well you could drink this nurnroot (lose HD), donate part of your soul (death save) or drain 2 quarts of blood (HP). The choice is yours, but once we start, there’s no going back”
Great video, I always like to hear how people handle resurrection in D&D. Given the spells that player characters can learn for this purpose, character death can feel *too* cheap at times in 5e, so this is welcome food for thought. On a side note, it made me chuckle that you went with a photo of a bunch of German EUR cent coins at 6:34. Ah yes, (Nordic) gold and copper(-covered steel)… x)
Love this. Stealing this! Thanks. The sacrifice of something could be visualized with the “death” is drawn away from the friend to the sacrificed item or person (giving a memory as suggested). Love it.
I’m almost the complete opposite as far as magic goes. I run a high magic, the PCs are heroes type of game. So far we’ve had 3 deaths, but with true resurrection available they are alive and well but one has a scar on his neck left over from the decapitation
DC 20 isn't my thing at all but I'd really love to see people shift over to this system rather than 5.5. This is clearly a perfected form of 5e. 5.5 is a mess lol
So, how does that relate to characters with archery? I mean, it's clear that this is meant to apply to movement range, but when you can hit someone from 600 feet, it seems like it might be worth including additional distance descriptions (maybe within range before out of range?).
Ive never played solo either but i want to. My idea is to set my solo adventures in my world thousands of years before my group. So the corpses and loot they come across may have been my characters.
There's a great passage on page 2 of the Solo Dark PDF under JUMP IN. It's this perspective that I've taken when soloing a system that's wasn't designed to be a single player or cooperative/DM-less game or when playing through a published adventure. Use the oracles and prompts to guide the character choices. Solo gaming has been around for far longer than just a couple decades. I'm not even talking about the published TSR modules or Tunnels and Trolls (and similar) game books. I used to use the AD&D DMG to generate random dungeon crawls and would even play through modules on my own as a way to learn them before throwing them at my group. It's more about being confident in your improve skills and imagination while also being completely open to weird turns in the action and fair in your rulings. Modern solo gaming is far more structured than it used to be and it really doesn't need to be. Solo Dark is a perfect example of how solo gaming tools can be light yet robust in their function. I think coders call this elegance? That all said: Ironsworn: Starforged is a great purpose designed solo game. One Page Solo Engine is a fantastic, versatile and PWYW solo system. Thousand Year Old Vampire is a great game but too brooding for my tastes.
Have you played the quiet year? I got it to use to build my newest setting then those darn McElroy brothers took my totally unique idea, so I didn’t get a chance to do it until quite some time later - anyway, great map and city building / story telling system

Downloaded SoloDark and am looking forward to using it as a way to enjoy playing a session as a player with my nephew instead of being a DM. So, SoloDark as a cooperative session instead of alone.
There are so many important changes in 5.5e that I am looking forward to! However, it will likely be a year before my core group will all have access to these rules. Even then, they may be reluctant to jump systems with our current campaign - which no one wants to end. I'll probably end up running a bunch of short games and one-shots to test it out.
