Gresham College was founded in 1597 and has been providing free lectures in the City of London for over 400 years.
This four-century-old tradition continues today with three or more lectures a week available to watch on RU-vid and our website.
Gresham College is able to continue to offer free public lectures thanks to the generosity of our supporters. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest minds. To support Gresham's mission, please consider making a donation: www.gresham.ac.uk/support/
The fact that Russia, a great power in Europe, and member of the Triple Entente, was excluded from the 1919 Versailles Peace Conference was a terrible blunder. Russia had sacrificed 2 million troops 1914-17 holding back German-Austro forces in western Ukraine and Poland. She deserved a voice at the peace table which redesigned post war Europe.
Of course there are different human species. We know them from their features. All are notable for their specific gifts as well as undeniable differences.
Let's take its "Jewel In the Crown ". 13 million Indians were famished to death. And this is the lower figure. It's easy to abolish slavery when you have millions of Indentured servants/chattel slaves in the Indian subcontinent. Where are the roads, bridges, power plants, railroads (excluding those to carry out the loot). Where are the networks of schools and hospitals, and Episcopal churches. Where is the Episcopal Church denouncing and defending. Weren't they out there seeing what their flock was doing. And what of all those intermarriages over the course of 300 years- Perish the thought! 1 million starved to death in Ireland. Thousands more massacred in Cecil Rhodes' Central African fiefdom. And this is documented in video in plain 20th Century. The millions of Chinese turned into opiu. addicts. Should we go to the rest of Southeast Asis - Burms, Malaysia etc.... FDR was right.
There has to be caution with regards to treatment because we shouldn't encourage dysgenic behaviour with regards to autism. The American business approach to autism isn't any better - completely unprofessional.
The fact is chimpanzee is share what 98% of our DNA? They are the species we resemble, but can't meet with. Granted their hair and look a little different but if you were to shave them, they look remarkably similar to us. Certainly in that scenario, I doubt a different animal would be able to tell us apart.
I've always assumed that the only somewhat humanoid species that we could breed with were Neanderthals and they seem to only thrive during the ice age. Supposedly we had small numbers starting out, so if Neanderthals were struggling even worse. I've always assumed they died off because of those struggles or we finally finished them off ourselves.

19:50 - i just want to make a note here, when left-types point this stuff out, it USUALLY comes off as "the evil white, straight men aren't letting minorities compete" - even if we dont mean it that way. But its not that. Minorities, for much of early modernity, simply did not have the opportunities or the means to do these things. Much as those institutions were set up by long-dead white men, accessible to only white men. It isnt as simple as living white men dismissing a first-nations candidate (or other heritage) for their heritage. Its often that there was no FN candidate to begin with. So... It doesnt have to be a badge of shame against living people that things are getting more diverse. It doesn't have to be castigation from radical types. It CAN just be a celebration of progress
Prokofiev noted once that pianists tend to play his music way too percussively and loud.He wrote divine melodies:some visions fugitives, in 1,3 and (especially) 2 piano concertos.
we intermarried our way into one species ! no population of humanoid stayed isolated , without interbreeding with nearby other populations/ there were many frequent migrations out of Africa and back to Africa , and many migrations between regions.
Wonderful, provocative topic! I can eagerly accept the role of chance in evolution, and I don't think we should stop there. Contingency, paradox, compounded effects, dynamic filters, dialectical enhancers, redundancy, feedback mechanisms, potentiation, dynamic pulsing, bootstrapping and conditions that act as gauntlets or multipliers or course correctors are all undeniable powers of change in dynamic systems like natural selection. And speaking of dynamic systems, how can we ignore phase-change thresholds and transformations!? In other words, anything that we use today as metaphors or memes in modern life--think siloes, influencers, resonance, opportunism, settler gaze, willful ignorance, disruptive innovation--might be profitably applied to illuminate the long, incredibly complex history of evolution. And this can happen without denying or defying Darwin's essential idea, in all its brilliant, generative grandeur.
It's true, but I think the military spending is the only reason we can have such modern scientific tools. Secular democracy needs protection. From revolutions of idiocy, from religious zealotry, from non-peaceful nations. As much as I feel the US military is bloated, I'd rather have a bloated military than a caliphate that kills scientists for looking up at the "heavens"
How so? Edit: I should have been more specific. I see two ways of interpreting your comment, which contradict each other, so curious if you would mind elaborating.
