Making videos and building videomaking-tools in Oslo, Norway ...

Wanna support the channel?
A coffee gets the creative juices flowing
www.buymeacoffee.com/andresjoberg

Currently making videos on DIY filming gear: cheap functional softbox and key light, other lights, building a set, creating a youtube-studio on the cheap, that kind of stuff. Also doing videos about testing other youtubers advice on how to film things, lighting setups and other tricks and tips are also in the works, putting their theories to the test: can *anyone* can get into making videos for themselves and succeed?

Probably branching into more general filmmaking over time as I use the gear I've built to film tutorials and how-to's for my Roller Skate shop while documenting the whole process on this channel, hopefully helping other small business owners see how they can easily and cheaply leverage the power of video for marketing and running their own business.

@@Shawnbbeckner ah yeah the rode lavalier is a good one - I’m waiting for the dji lav to come back in stock here in Norway to try it with the dji mic 2, should be interesting :) As for the breathing I think you are right, proper «mic technique» in terms of breathing, little sounds and breathing through the nose etc are all things that a good mic will pick up, so practicing that should probably improve things a lot, as well as «controlling» your voice to avoid level spikes etc :)

@@Shawnbbeckner Actualky , I looked at the sign video now, and I hear you have that quick inhale sound going on there, is that what you are thinking of? Cause the audio itself is really good, coming across loud and clear :) You could look into using the gate feature, it will cut sound below a certain level, so if adjusted properly it could help cutting the audio on the inhales since they seem lower in volume than the voice :) The gate, and slowing down the pace a little and not stressing with inhaling to speak again but rather draw a slow breath and continue might be the solution :)

@@Shawnbbeckner I’m running 6db gain on the transmitter, zero gain on the receiver when I wear it on my chest - zero gain when I wear it at the neckline of my t-shirt or clip it to the brim of my cap - but that is for my voice and volume level I normally speak at, you have to test and adjust this according to distance between mic and mouth, how loud or soft spoken you or your subjects are etc - there is no «magic gain setting» :) What I do is I start out either zero gain, check the metering on the receiver and if I’m just touching into yellow when I raise my voice a bit itMs usually good with no clipping what so ever, so always check the metering on the receiver and things should be fine :)

I’m getting the iPhone 16 Pro soon (upgrading from the 12 Pro) and figured I would do some research ahead of time to see if there was any sort of problems or a catch with these transfer speeds. I had a feeling 10 Gbps was too good to be true. Lo and behold :/ I already ordered some cables that are supposed to be capable of transferring at that speed, so I’ll test all of that out when I get my phone. Not sure what to expect yet but definitely not expecting much now that I know this is an issue with the 15 Pro series. So much for “it just works”.

@AndreSjoberg 11 дней назад
@@zenshadow26055 Firstly: congrats on upgrading, the 15 pro max was great and the 16 will probably be as great (at least) as well :) Secondly: Would love to hear your results from testing when you get it, like I said in the video transferring from the phone to an external SSD (of the correct spec) is as close to max speed as it is reasonable to expect, and the weirdness happens when transferring directly to the pc’s and macbooks I’ve tried - which is *really* strange, but having dealt with windows machines and apple machines for over 30 years doesn’t surprise me ;) Of course: it could be argued that transferring files from the phone to a machine by cable is «old school», especially since airdrop between iphone and mac is really fast, but as a windows user myself that’s not an option really, and realistically windows/iphone-users needing to transfer 100s of gigs on a regular basis through cable might be an edge case with only a small percentage of the total user mass falling in this category :/ But: at least the write speed to an external ssd within spec like the samsung T7 drives are within spec and fast, so there is a workaround for that only takes a slightly longer more fiddly route around the problem, but it would be lovely if it just *worked* indeed :)

@@AndreSjoberg thanks for the tip! I'm on the same research route for about a week now as you were because my partner wants to start her career as a user generated content (UGC) creator, so I'm drifting between the options available on the market and coming back to the setup you picked over and over again - Dji Mic 2 receiver + transmitter. I also found Instamic, a less popular niche wireless mic that can be connected via Bluetooth and wirelessly, and be controlled by Android smartphones and iPhones via the mobile app. It looks like a good alternative but it does not support lavalier mic. And another one, Hollyland M2 has the same disadvantage, apart from 24 bit audio only. So again, DJI mic 2 sounds like the best bang for the buck so far. Especially if I get a DJI Osmo Pocket 3.
@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg 15 дней назад
@@EAGauss Aaah, right :) Yeah, from a practical perspective, I almost haven’t used the 32 bit float backup recording at all, since setting the level properly makes it really hard to blast it into distortion (and remember, it only does 32 bit float on the internal backup recording). If you’re getting the pocket the dji mic 2 can be used solely without a receiver with better quality than if connected via bt to phone. But if one doesn’t need 32 bit float, and doesn’t need internal recording, and doesn’t need a lav the cheaper options are good options - but if one needs/wants a lav, and internal recording, the dji mic 2 is good, just remember that there is no internal backup recording if connected via BT to phone, AND the native iphone app doesn’t support using external mic’s :)

@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg Месяц назад
@@DouglasSilva-ys6lw After the firmware update the dji mic 2 is not a bad choice, requiring a little less work in post :) Mostly depending on how bright or dark your voice is to begin with - I found that a little boost at the higher frequencies, using the simplified «Voice Channel» in Davinci Resolve (a simplified, combined eq and compressor plugin) did the trick for added clarity. Regarding Dji Mic 2 vs Røde Videomic Go 2 - it mostly depends on if you will primarily be sitting at a desk, a short distance from the camera and mic, or standing in front of the camera not far away (like a meter/3 feet) from camera and mic. If that is the case then the rode video mic go 2 is good and gives slightly better audio quality, and it’s less «stuff» to set up/adjust/remember to check. If you will be moving around a lot, or standing away from the camera, in general not always be at the same distance from camera and mic all the time the Dji Mic 2 is a good choice, and cheaper if you only need 1 mic and can buy the 1 mic/1receiver combo (and don’t see the value of a charging case) If you *do* need 2 mics the Røde Videomic Pro is slightly better value, since it *also* includes 2 lavalier mics, so you don’t need the mic unit at chest level - the lavs cost extra for the dji mic 2. Other than that the receiver is smaller for dji and has a front screen, Røde receiver has screen on top when mounted on top of camera so that’s a thing some people don’t like always. If you run Sony cam the dji receiver now has a mount for connecting directly (purchased separately) that connects it directly to the shoe, eliminating usb c or audio cable, which is an advantage. as for EQ on the røde videomic go 2 I generally increase eq on the top end, not much, but that again *is* purely dependent on the characteristics of each persons voice, so some people don’t need to do that, some people do :)

@AndreSjoberg Месяц назад
@@DouglasSilva-ys6lw Your welcome :) From your description the Røde VideoMic Go 2 is probably going to work fine :) And less settings and parts to have to care about :) I do have a background from way back as a dj and doing some remixes in digital audio programs like cubase, ableton live, etc, but also experience with hardware mixers and eq/compression from being part of running a small musical venue, but nothing at a «professional» level. So the tools in DaVinci for eq and compression are the same type you would find in audio production software as well as in hardware units, so it’s all applicable between old school and «new» school :) Since DaVinci has the free version it’s a great place to start, and a great tool that will grow with you as you grow and need more features :)

Just updated! Thanks for letting us know. Can I ask what gain level you set your transmitter and receiver to? Any what about your in camera mic volume setting, what do you like for that? I can't find any videos that discusses how these work, and Im not sure what's the best thing to do there. Thanks!
@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg Месяц назад
@@StudioSam Currently I have the transmitter gain set to +6 and the receiver at default 0. When wearing the mic on my chest the audio dips into yellow on the signal strength display on the receiver, which is a little low but can be easily raised in editing. I’m using my iphone 15 pro max as a camera, so in the black magic camera app the volume is set at a 100% (as in no extra gain). The theory is you want the strongest signal possible at the start (the mic), since a low signal at the start will introduce lots of noise later when trying to boost a weak initial signal. Depending on which camera you have there are some presets for gain in the transmitter settings for cameras, but if your camera is not in those presets then just testing and spending some time finding out what sounds good to see how far you can push it is the only option, since many factors like how loud you usually talk, distance of mic from your mouth +++ all play a part :) But start with increasing gain on mic first, and use the indicator on the receiver to make sure you are in the yellow but not the red, then you have strong initial signal as a starting point, then start adjusting the camera gain for a strong signal to your recording, so some tests until the audio is too loud, and dial it back, that way you’ll get the best audio for your setup, gear and way of talking :)

Was there a Firmware update or something? Michael Tobin's video shows that you CAN do 32 bit float recording on the transmitter by just pushing the record button. He was NOT connected to the receiver. Mine is coming in a couple days. I will know for sure soon enough.
@AndreSjoberg
@AndreSjoberg Месяц назад
@@staticsong A common point of confusion :) You can’t switch to 32 bit float recording with only the transmitter, switching between 24 and 32 internal recording mode has to be done through the receiver. When you have switched 32 bit float recording on for the internal recorder in the mic with the receiver you can then start the internal recording on the mic with the record button without it (the mic) being connected to anything. Problem is the mic comes with internal recording set to 24 bit as default. So without the receiver (or osmo pocket 3 or action 4) you can’t flip the switch on the mic to do internal recordings in 32 bit float. Also: If however you connect the mic to an iphone with bluetooth the internal recording feature is disabled on the mic.

@@markemerson98 Yeah, that is just plain weird - the strangest thing just happened though!!! I’m currently running ios 18 beta, AND i have the latest firmware on my DJi mic 2 tx/rx, AND IT WORKS!! I just hooked the dji receiver to my phone via usb c, turned stuff on, and the Native Apple Camera app properly recorded audio from the mic, standing 15 feet away from my phone :D Breaking News and you heard it here first :)

@@markemerson98 BUUUUUUT still no audio recording in native apple camera app when mic is directly connected via bluetooth … only via receiver, gaaah.

It’s crazy there’s not a dji app that lets you transfer the files to iPhone

@AndreSjoberg 21 день назад
@@kingslepton You don’t need one, just connect the dji mic 2 transmitter to your phone with a usb c to usb c-cable, or usb c to lightning cable, and you can access the mic storage via the Files-app on your iPhone :) The problem is of course there is no app to *adjust the settings* on the DJI Mic 2, maybe that is what you where thinking about? But even if there was an app like that the Bluetooth audio quality is so bad being able to adjust the settings without the receiver really isn’t much point :/

i haven't plugged in my phone to my laptop/computer in a while. air drop has been a game changer for that but i'm guessing it's just a mac thing. also, i love your background!

Hahaha, most people don’t wire up anymore, but yeah, I’m running PC and iPhone so there are some options, but not as fast as airdrop, which makes it useless for 50-150 gigabytes of files :/ Airdrop is about 1 GB per second, which *should* be the speed of the wired transfer as well, which is why this video happened - being able to do 1GB per second to the ssd but not to a computer, and not even to a macbook is just strange :/ The background, yeah, quite the opposite of yours ;) and ever changing as I reorganize stuff, gonna try filming into the corner to the right of the workbench soon, add some more depth, having my workbench at a 45 degree angle to the room, should be interesting cause there is *loads* of crap going on in the background :)

Hahahaha, yeah, just wish I started sooner and published even more ;) I think the first first video, vacuuming christmas tree pine needles, is filmed on my Siemens S65 cellphone with a built in camera - my previous cellphone had a detachable camera, siemens s55, with 640px times 480 video, crazy times :)

This is a little more DIY then I'm capable of. 🤪 Nevertheless it's really cool! Cheers Andre!

@@Justin_Hikes I have faith my friend, you can do this ;) Of course the «fancy slider» can be replaced with a cloth or towel on a table surface, it’s possible even to use a roller skate with your phone stuck into the boot ;)
