As noticed on the label, Paul Dino was the composer of "Na Ne No". Dino had a top 40 hit of his own in 1961 with "Ginny Bell". He is not related to Kenny Dino, who had a Top 40 around the same time with :Your Ma Said You Cried In Your Sleep At Night."

"Na Ne No" was one of Dick Biondi's favorite novelty tunes of 1962, and he played it enough to give it some attention on Chicago's WLS station. but otherwise this failed to make the Hot 100. Phil Spector was a monster, but he did arrange some very brilliant records. Of course he wasted Liberty Records' precious time by stealing "He's A Rebel" from them & Snuff Garrett, who were going to record the song with Vicki Carr. Because of Phil's great arranging skills (and big ego), The Crystals version was the superior version.

You are so correct. Biondi rode this one but it never flew. WLS spread it all over, but the number never reached any sales. I remember it distinctly and Biondi playing it. Good post!

@@MadMomma-kj9ks I recall an old radio tape of Biondi playing this song located on RU-vid, and declaring "Na Ne No" as "They're playing my song!" during the intro as a joke. This is why Biondi will be missed, he was so wacky. Anything to entertain his listeners during a time when DJ's were to be amusing to teenage listeners. Biondi was one of the greats. I'm from Detroit, not Chicago, but I learned to appreciate Biondi's talents. May he R.I.P. I often wonder if "Na Ne No" even got beyond promotional pressings. After Liberty Records gave up on the song, it wound up on a very rare album on Everest Records titled "The Many Sides Of Troy Shondell". I do think that Liberty may have bought some of Everest Records shares for a time in 1962-63.

Robert, at that time you would have also heard Lee Allen on WXYZ up in Detroit playing Vic Dana doing "A girl needs to love and be loved" The record had tons of dedications and he played it night after night. Never heard it on any other station.. I lived in Columbus, Ohio then and every night searched the dial for cool stations. @@robertorick6383

When I was a kid my dad often played this song while on family road trips and it never failed to get laughs. It's been pretty well burned into my memory, so here are some of the missing lyrics that I remember. Starting at the beginning of the song up to where this clip starts, and then the part after this short clip finishes. "Well you know how us folks down in Texas, boast of our home in the west. You've heard us a sayin' in Texas, that things are the biggest and best. Well a few months ago in the paper, a fabulous story come out, that proves that us folks down in Texas, know what we're talking about. Here's to a guy with a big Texas smile... "... B is for the billions he's been bilking. I is to indemnify his loss. L is for the loan from Uncle Sam. And double L just like in double cross. I is for the interest he's accruing. E is for the eggheads he outsmarted. Put them all together and you've got Billie Sol whose initials are emblazoned on our hearts... BS."...

For some reason the whole song is unavailable in the US. Was just watching a video interview of LBJ's mistress, in which she mentions Billy Sol Estes. I can kinda sort sing some of these words, although I was NOT political at the time -- have never really been. This song was about his corruption. Maybe I should buy the LP and have the songs on it digitalized.

Can't figure out who he was imitating in the Witch Queen number - not Redbone or Elvis for sure! Grunting through half the lyrics and repeating "put a spell on Y'ALL!" over and over didn't cut it. This was 1978? I bet he was too polluted to remember the words and this was his best take.

What a waste of session time! Why buy a track by an impersonator when you can listen to one by the real Elvis? Lollipop Records, whoever they were, likely learned that lesson with this loser. Not so with PJ Proby. He's still turning out CD's of him doing hits of the big music stars, mimicking their voice. What for?
@haroldjohnson6843
@haroldjohnson6843 10 лет назад
This version of Do You Know Who I Am is a dead on imitation of Elvis' voice and style. I'm curious why any record company would release an Elvis impersonation track and expect it to sell. P.J. Proby's wiki says he portrayed Elvis in a theatre production in '77. Maybe he was stuck in Elvis mode when he did this cover.

Dick is a name. If you regard it as a swear word then that's your problem. Dick was a singer,song publisher & songwriter but his main success came in the 60's & the 70's as a major record producer for many, many major stars. He produced 7 songs for P.J.Proby. People who do not know what they are talking about get on my wick!!. Plenty of them on Y.T.! including you.

When P.J. arrived in England in 1964 he was so great that people said "We don't need Elvis here after all! We've got someone better!"

Dick Glasser ( Dick Lory) was a brilliant song writer,singer & record producer who worked with a singer that later was to become The Legend P.J.Proby. Yeah! I'll close with that!
@rontenn
@rontenn 11 лет назад
Speeding vocals up does make them sound slightly higher.We all know that.The Chipmunks voices are ordinary voices speeded up like crazy. I'm glad we agree on that. P.J.'s voice is slighly speeded up by 5 seconds in every 60 seconds recorded.Hardly anything worthwhile but you can hear the difference. As for Dick Glasser being clueless.....you're another RU-vidr without respect!!
@rontenn
@rontenn 11 лет назад
Big difference?? Slight difference in my opinion!.The voice only sounds slighty different because it's speeded up.DOH! YOU started off normal with your postings but it's YOU that have turned weird. I do not deal with s**t stirrers! Byeee!

Count seconds? You can't detect a big difference in the pitch of PJ Proby's voice when you compare this video to the other one? Man you are totally weird.
@rontenn
@rontenn 11 лет назад
It's not a big mistake....both versions are brilliant! P.J. of course just sang it.He had nothing to do with the studio technicalities.How do I know if Dick speeded it up a bit on purpose or by accident? Most people would not be able to hear the difference in speed anyway. Who counts the seconds away when a song is playing!? LOL!
@statsystv8
@statsystv8 11 лет назад
Are you suggesting Dick Glasser accidentally released this song at a faster speed than it was sung when recorded? That would have been an awfully big mistake. Too bad he's not around to defend himself. Did PJ Proby ever complain about it or does he want people to think he actually sang it that fast?
@rontenn
@rontenn 11 лет назад
By accident or intentionally there's about a 12 second difference in the length of the identical song.The 1966 release is faster. But all the "yeahs" & the "whoo whoo's" etc. added by P.J. are in exactly the same place. The other vinyl version I have is 2min. 23 seconds long.This is also a USA only release coupled with "My Prayer" & both songs naming P.J.Proby as the singer.Producer of "Wicked Woman" on this single is once again Dick Glasser, as was the original USA 1964 single.
@statsystv8
@statsystv8 11 лет назад
What do you mean they speeded up this track 12 seconds before they released it? This video is a good 14 seconds longer than the other Wicked Woman video on youtube and there's considerably more blank time on the end of the other one. That would put this one at 15 or more seconds slower. Is the other vinyl version you're talking about slow tempo like this one or fast like the other one?
@rontenn
@rontenn 11 лет назад
I used to think there were two different versions of this song by Orville Woods/P.J.Proby. After hearing this clip I did start to believe there were three versions. But after listening to this clip many times & also the 1966 Proby U.K. single release of "Wicked Woman" & comparing them I now think it's exactly the same version but the 1966 release was speeded up by about 12 seconds.So I'm back to my original idea that there are just two versions on vinyl.

Hi statsystv8, You have asked very good question and I will try to find the answer. I have removed my original response which was incorrect. I have the original Orville Woods 45 vinyl released USA Liberty 55669 in 1963 B side to "Darlin'" produced by Dick Glasser. I have listened to it again. It has same vocals but different backing to this upload and the upload by lindgren33.
@statsystv8
@statsystv8 11 лет назад
Do you have the Orville Woods track on the 45 vinyl? Somebody named rontenn has commented on a track uploaded by lindgren33 and said that track is the original recording and that it's the one released as Orville Woods. That track is a lot faster tempo than this one. Is rontenn wrong?
@statsystv8

If this track is PJ Proby I wonder why it wasn't released as is. The speed on his released track was boosted so much he sounds like he was sniffing something and the backup singers don't even sound human.

The Legends were a very popular group, in the Midwest, in the early 1960s. Just when the group was starting to get noticed, nationally, Sam McCue, the lead Singer/Lead Guitarist went to play guitar for the Everly Brothers. This Song: Run to the Movies, was off the Legends 2nd album. (also named "Run to the Movies"). The Legends 1st. album, "Legends let loose" contained great regional songs as: "I Wish I Knew, Bop A Lena, Lariet and Say Mama (great remake of Gene Vincent's song).

Some people think this is from 1959.Another source says it is from 1963 but states that Sonny Barkan (Hendrix) wrote both words & music.No mention of George Goehring except to say he employed Sonny. No way is the Proby version a demo for Elvis. I'm pretty certain he recorded it for his label Liberty in 1962/63 but it never got officially released.

So Marshall's version was where Proby got the phrasing for his! He wasn't original but he always had an ear for something good to copy. I'll give him that much. Joy Marshall's rendition is smooth as silk. Proby's turns me off from the get go with his put-on imitation of Nat Cole's distinctive accent.
@rontenn
@rontenn 12 лет назад
It's always been thought that this was a demo done by P.J.Proby in about 1961/62...this now proves it wasn't. P.J. must have recorded it as an album track or possibly with the intention to putting it out as an A or B side in his early days. I take it that this original version by The Legends is from the late 50's?
