I’m here (The Algarve) looking for property too. I live in Australia. My plan, if when I leave I am still keen is to come back for 2-3 months and rent in the area that I resonate with. So far haven’t found it. Off to Nazare next.
We did the same. We left 7 years ago to beautiful Singapore. We didn't sell our home, though, just in case one day, if we want to move back. We love our lives here. Kids go to international school with friends from everywhere in the world and they are very happy. We have sunshine all year around and communal swimming pools and gym at our doorstep. Lots of activities for kids and adults. We get to hop to lots of luxury resorts in Bali, Philippines, and Vietnam. Its easier to visit Japan and Australia since they are very close if you want road trips. The tax is very low, but the cost of living is high, but we don't move to save money, we move, so we get to enjoy our lives more. We don't have to worry about childcare, cleaning, and cooking, as it's affordable to have a live-in helper here. Not to mention, they have the best health care system in the world.

Ahh think you're looking for the miracle solution by saying warmer climates would make staying off your phone easier. I live in Queensland, Australia (I.e. a fucking hot place) and spend most of the Spring and Summer indoors with the air con 😆 Your bad habits will still be there in a warm climate, but you can crack them if you want to badly enough!
I really hope this works out for you guys, you have such a lovely family and I've followed you since the very start. I think the boys are at the perfect age to try something new as it's much harder to change things once they're older and have their own friends and independent lives. I just want you all to be leaving for the right reasons as it does come across more that you're running away rather than solely looking for a change in lifestyle. I get that every country has it's problems but from experience countries like Portugal (which I love btw) does have a lot of issues especially when it comes to buying property, heatlhcare, education and just generally dealing with every day issues. I absolutely think you're doing the right thing though if you're unhappy but I always saw you guys maybe living in rural Scotland or Ireland even rather than abroad. Anyway, loving watching the adventure and hoping it works out for you all. x
My kids are 5 and 7 and I am so lucky they so far haven’t been exposed to any of these trends but I am DREADING to think what it’ll be like when that time comes. This stuff isn’t better is just less bad! Thank you for sharing this Stef xx
So I 100% agree with this premise but I also have to wonder why are we as parents letting our kids have this kind of access to social media channels, RU-vid etc enough for them to be the audience of these clowns? It really feels like our entire culture really needs to rethink priorities. Just because internet is everywhere doesn’t mean children should have their brains hacked by it, so as a mother, I believe it’s our duty to protect our kids from the danger of idolizing “influencers”, consumerism, marketing geared towards them, horrible values thrown at them. If that makes me overprotective, good!
Hey, We haven't got your blackout cards before. However. As getting married next year & looking for communication or connection or ice breakers for guests. Besides the weather (worse in Ireland) i could have seen you all settle well in Ireland. The sale of your house in England would buy you a more than adequate house here and have zero mortgage, be close to home, slower countryside pace of life, no longer part of the UK (providing your in the republic) and its an english speaking country.
This is the hot take that we all needed. It's so shameless. And it goes WAY beyond the kids who know who these goons are. My 6 yr old saw a Prime backpack and instantly started pestering me for one. He has no idea what Prime is, or who sells it (and thankfully, what it tastes like)....but because a 'bigger boy' was wearing one he was intrigued enough to want it. Social collateral cascades like dominos, and that's why it can be so dangerous.
I would totally suggest renting rather than putting all your eggs in one basket and jumping into buying. Rent in an area or two that you love and see what you prefer. It’s a huge commitment and quite risky.
this seems so wild to me! in my country you can find good 70% of food organic from local farmers’ market. and it usually costs cheeper than at the regular market. I’m so used to this lifestyle (and of course that’s what I choose for my kids as well), that when I travel abroad all foods seems so weird to me, totally different taste (sausages, bread, juices, cheeses, oats, milk, some fruits and veggies, etc.). I don’t like it. of course we too have a ton of such products at the market, but it’s not nearly as popular as in other countries I guess? I mean MOST people shop at the farmers market.

You speak aloud the take that many of us have. I grew up with RU-vid and this "product era" it has developed into has made me abhor so many content creators I used to enjoy, or even look up to. To the point I don't even bother visiting this platform very often anymore. The exploitation of children is so unbelievably obvious and they don't give the slightest fuck about it because all they see is green when they check their stock value. Also, you reminded me I've got a spaceship that I crashed landed into a barn in the countryside that I need to go repair, at least that's what my kid thinks... 👀
