Not to mention how he unified a community and built a program from a small ag school to an undisputed top 10-12 program all time. Joe donated millions upon millions of his salary to the university for academic ventures like the most utilized library on campus. He has various scholarships for students his family makes each year to this day. He’s an Ivy League educated man who always placed academics above all. Is Joe perfect? Hell no, he has made his mistakes like any major person in power does and could’ve done more to report the situation. If you read the report you’d know he never actually saw any abuse, he was only told about it in witness scenarios. Given his old age and stubborn mindset later in life when he learned of this, he did what most seniors do, he brushed it off as heresy. However does that wipe out all the good he accomplished for his men and the community as a whole? Absolutely not. Football completely aside Joe’s legacy need to be holistically viewed, it cannot simply be wiped away by your close minded incomplete viewpoint. Just as you said “many people do” look away? Why? Let me get this right. Paterno and Sandusky went on how many recruiting trips together? In all those trips and all those practices and all those games and all those holiday parties NOTHING raised eyebrows until it came out? Is it possible like in alot of cases PEOPLE didn't want to see it? See Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein and many others.
For his football coaching achievements, he deserves to be in the HOF. But for his morality and ethics, he deserves a place in the Hall of SHAME! People can argue about the separation of sporting achievements from life, but, imo, they are NOT mutually exclusive from one another in all respects....

Joe Paterno Has graduated more Athletes than any other coach in history and the NCAA with their Stalinist revisions can not change that. JoePa has raised huge amounts of money to support scholarship at Pennsylvania State University. However he was not a saint he was just a man.
I don't understand why certain people are so quick to condemn this man. You don't know for sure exactly what he knew. Nobody does. According to the reports, he was told of inappropriate behavior, and he reported it up the chain of command. We're not sure if Joe knew the extent of the "inappropriate behavior." Nobody is. When asked, McQueary himself couldn't even recall the exact words he used when he told Joe of the incident. If you guys want to hate somebody, hate Jerry Sandusky.

The fact that he could have saved many of those kids but chose to cover it up for his "legacy" should bother people, but it doesn't. I believe he knew his career was in jeopardy either way after this. He just would have to live with the results. So after all this, he took more of a perspective on looking at how great the years were, and not how "good" or even "hard" the upcoming years would become. I can agree with most here. However, if he would've pursued more action (after the administration did nothing) he would get the hard end of the bone from them sooner than he actually did. He should've pursued it but that would've put his coaching career in more jeopardy. He just watched everyone sweep it under the covers. He did his job telling the higher power. But it's their responsibility to take action. He didnt pursue with it cuz at the end of the day he has to answer to the administration.

Joe paterno is not just a Coach, he is a LEGENDARY Individual that means so much to the people of Pennsylvania and elsewhere throughout College Football. I've looked up to him as a child, and I'm proud to say that I lived in the days when Joe paterno was the head coach of PSU.
