Have you ever dreamed of your favorite musicians performing at your house? And, raising money for a meaningful cause?
That's the vision for Jazz on the Pond, an annual celebration showcasing some of the most talented musicians on the planet, all for the purpose of funding jazz scholarships at The Eastman School of Music. And, it all happens in the back yard.
i met Mr. Phillips decades ago in NYC, when he played at The Bottom Line I believe it was, in 1995, with the shortly for a time reformed Crusaders(and no, Joe Sample was not with them); after the gig, I went back to the dressing room and introduced myself; told him I had followed his career since the album called "Joyous" by Pleasure-we also talked about the phenomenal Louis Johnson, and then we talked about his days with Pleasure; he then demonstrated how he played the bass on a cut called "Dance To The Music"-I was wowed-truly he is a gifted and in my opinion, anointed musician and I considered myself fortunate to have met him in person when I did. Hope he's still playing('cause there's not many like him anymore), and if so, would like to see him do an album of serious funk, playing like he's doing in this video above! 9-1-24; amended 9-2-24.
