I suppose Jane Fairfax's position was quite similar to Jane Austen's - educated but poor. Jane Fairfax's accomplishments in music will not bring her more than a governess's salary; Jane Austen's literary talents - now recognised internationally - did not provide her with affluence in her lifetime.
Thank you. i came here looking for an explanation to Jane's strange health issues: headaches, indispositions, being "out of sorts". While listening to you I realized she was under a ridiculous amount of stress, which Emma and Frank certainly did not help. Now I see that Emma's thoughtlessness was a real threat to Jane and Frank seems to me like, being out of his aunt's sight gave him a taste for recklessness. Maybe that's why his aunt never let him out of her sight, if she could help it.
Thank you for your videos on Emma! You provide so much good information and help me to understand the time period and customs. It is also interesting to hear about Jane Austen's writing style. It helps me appreciate her as a writer so much more. Thank you!
first of all thank you for getting some discussion going on this book!!! when i look at auora's reckless? ways i can't think that it's her mothers genes and even if her father had been more attentive or different she still would have had a wild spirit...her mother at a young age ran away to be a cheap actress and was happy to do it...that tells you what kind of blood runs through the family viens....i think her nature is bigger than the fathers nurture
Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Cecily. 'Mansfield Park' is often underestimated by readers. I am glad that I have contributed to your existing appreciation of the novel. Caroline
Hello Ally, I'm so glad that you are enjoying the videos. This is quite a new channel and I began with a small stock of videos with the view of seeing how things would go. That said, next week I shall release five new videos on Jane Austen's 'Sense and Sensibility'. They will be published across five days from 21st-25th September. I hope that you will find them interesting -- do let me know what you think, Caroline ")
