I just purchased a 1999 D2 with 135k miles (trailered it home on Friday). Looks like it’s spent it’s life in Dallas. I’ve spent the weekend watching videos and am looking forward to clearing up all the issues its sure to have. Do you have any recommendations? Anything from where to purchase parts, forums to read or quality resources is appreciated. Whatever you think.
Oh yeah, there’s tons out there. The D2 is well documented. If you haven’t found him yet, Addicted Motors on RU-vid does mostly Rover stuff. For parts, check out Lucky8, Rovers North, Atlantic British, British Parts of Utah, RovahFarm, Great Basin Rovers… there’s probably more I’m forgetting. Some UK parts places have better selection at times and can get stuff to you just as quickly, like FamousFour, Rimmer Bros, LRParts.net, LR Direct, Paddock Spares, and John Craddock LTD. Forums mostly are DiscoWeb (unsure of how active still, but lots of history), and then Facebook groups. Oh, and get yourself an Ultragauge. Good luck with the new adventure!
Awesome. Thinking about buying one. Needs work, mostly cosmetic. New engine, head gasket redone, new fuel pump, seems well maintained, maybe some oil leaks, AC needs to be recharged…
Depends on what you want out of it, but that sounds like a buy to me. If it isn't rusty and has been mechanically maintained, that would make an excellent trail truck - or - you could learn how to do some prep work for the paint and then get a pro to paint it and save a lot of money. Either way, I think I'd bring that thing home!
You must know me well, I do not have it. In fact, I think it left a couple months after making this video. But a good friend in my neighborhood owns it and has done an awesome build, one day I intend to do a follow up video on its progress!
Once rust creeps into these RR's like this one, its game over. A grenade waiting to happen. Defenders are a different story as rust and bodywork are a breeze. Good luck man.
It sounds like you really need an f150 limited. It's a truck, it's fast, quiet, it's a truck, decent off road, and it can do truck things because it's a real truck.
In reality, I need a truck like you describe, a vintage utility vehicle like my Series, a more modern one like a D1/RRC to do my fun/challenging off-roading in, then I need a 911 to do my sporty driving in, and then a L322 Supercharged to take the kids to school in and just have as a nice car. It's that simple! I have thought about this particular car over the pasty year and a half and wished I'd kept it - it was a good one.
Hey there, just found your channel, awesome stuff. I have a 2016 LR4 and I love it. I'm looking into a Discovery 1 or 2 but I've heard 1999 is the last year they made them as a true Land Rovers. Do you have any recommendations on years or things to look for? Also, do you know any shops that will do a restoration if necessary that specializes in Land Rovers? I live in Ohio FYI. Appreciate the help in advance.
If there is no compression how are you going to build up air pressure to hold the valve in place? I don't quite see how a broken valve spring would result in no compression unless the valve subsequently bent. I have 2 P38s, both 99 Autobiographies. The recently purchased one had a misfire on cylinder 7 which I fixed by replacing the injector. Had to replace the rear diff as well. Six bolts holding the ring gear in place lost their heads and this was causing a vibration. Very strange. Good luck with yours.
Great video! 2 questions: (1) you mention that the upper hole is for a Series SWB, right? Are these also pre-threaded? (2) Unfortunately, the seat backs came without the bolts + washers. Which bolts did you use? Thnx!
Strange, my 2008 L322 SC is one of the fastest vehicles I've ever driven. Admittedly I've only ever driven regular cars, not sports cars but it's way faster than my LR3.
By comparison to my LR3, it is definitely significantly faster, but so was my LR4. The LR4 and 4.2 supercharged L322 both felt about the same in terms of speed. Even my E39 540i wagon that replaced this feels faster and it has over 100hp less. It's just a big car, and that's ok - it does what it needs to very well and there is just something about them that I love.
You can be 100% certain! I still have a stack 3" thick pile of records. The truck is doing great and it's my daily. Just passed VA state inspection and got some new sway bar bushings and end links. Hauls kids, goes to Rover events, just an all around workhorse. My buddy Allen may have run into you at Uwharrie a few weeks ago, one day I'll make it down there! Thanks for checking in, would love to hear about your adventures sometimes. You can email me rvarover.us@gmail.com if you like!
I have an update video I've recorded, just haven't had the chance to edit it and post it. Hopefully soon! Spoiler alert, it was way worse when I actually got it driving.
Lovely old girl. I would not sell it. She will knock spots off your LR3 as they are money pits. I have owned my discovery 2 for 18 years. Still going strong.
A rare vehicle here in the UK, a petrol engine. If frame is good then it's worth saving. I run 2 D2s. Both 2001 models both diesel. No frame rust as they are sprayed with oil every 6 months,
Depending on how old your L322 is, mine's a 2006 and it's the fastest car I've ever driven other than a Porsche 944 turbo and that was a lot newer then ( around 1989) and it was four or five years old. It was borrowed for a trip ( with the owner on board) but it was bloody quick ( around 142 mph indicated on a certain road going up North). Now I've not had my rangie anywhere near that sort of speed, but the acceleration on a 16 year old vehicle is bloody astounding! Especially in the mid range stomping on the gas ( literally as it's on LPG ) the acceleration from 35-40 up to 90 is astounding. And that is in standard automatic mode. Stick it in Sport and it's shit off a shovel, and in command shift when you take it up to the Red line in all of the needed gears up to 90 blew my personal socks off. And I bet it wouldn't be very far behind the Porsche 944 turbo either !
I wish. I would without a doubt keep it if that’s all that I had in it. Whether I sell it as is or fix it and sell it I will lose money on the deal, which making money on it wasn’t the point of buying this one but it is still sitting while I decide the route I want to take.
Nice to see you making videos again. I would keep it. It’s a decent Rover. I have an LR3 and owned several classics. Curious to see if you can repair or address the water leaks.
If you don't keep it let me know, I am interested in parts. I got my 2002 Discovery in worst state than yours, brought it home and within 2 weeks I had it running and wi 2 months it's on the road, so don't give up on it !
Hey! Thanks for the encouragement, I actually sold it not long after I posted this video to a friend of a friend who owns a Rover shop. He took it back to his place and got it running again. It was a cracked fuse box that was causing the issue. He had a spare known good unit and put it in, within a few hours of him owning it he had it running and driving. Not sure what he's done with it, but I have some more broken Rovers I'm rescuing that I'll be posting up soon!
I had 2001 Disco II. It was a fun SUV, but had all the common Disco issues. I had to replace the headliner (did it myself), replaced the sunroof seal to try and fix the leak down the windshield and worst of all, the notorious Three Amigos antilock issue. Tried some of the internet fixes for that one, but never got it sorted out. Needed a vehicle to tow my race car and trailer and tried with the Disco, but it wasn't long enough and felt very unstable.
Thanks for the invite! I’m going to check it out. One of my good friends has a cabin at Wintergreen, maybe we’ll come to the event and do a trail riding day in the area.
Looks great! I've been looking to do the same with my Discovery 4. I'm guessing the stock 2020 Defender tyre size is too big though for a straight swap (if I buy used wheels and tyres)
Actually the stock tires would fit well! The stock size for the 18 inch wheels I believe is 255/70/18, and I have put on 275/65/18 - they are the same height and sidewall, mine are just about an inch wider. I don't have any issues with rubbing during normal driving so I'm certain the 255/70 wouldn't. If you find a set, throw it on and let me know how they work out!
@@rvarover oh that's interesting! I have a friend with a new Defender so I might ask to swap wheels for a test fit. Here in the UK, new Defender steels wheels have gotten very cheap lately as the market becomes saturated, with owners opting for larger wheels (19/20/21")
Hey! I want to get in touch to potentially buy a D2 -- I live in VA in Blacksburg and am currently on the hunt! Please do let me know the best way I can reach out to you!
Hey there, give me a shout at rvarover.us@gmail.com. Unfortunately, this D2 is already with its new owner but I'm constantly on the lookout and definitely willing to help you find one.
