Of all the pianists who dipped into, or referenced, or incorporated, the classics, I always thought it would be Kuhn who would make an album of improvs based on lines, or excerpts, or entire works - préludes, say - by Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, maybe Sessions or Carter or Hindemith. Evans, for one example, had the chops and the sensibilities, but lacked, I guess, the confidence. Still waiting!
The difference in ability is clear. If this were an anonymous radio broadcast, it would probably be described as a performance between a master and his student.
What I love is the fact that Nate replaced Billy and didn't try to compete with his style! Nate came in, and his own style is just as perfect as Billy's. Chris and Robin? Sonic perfection! Steve's vibes are so beautiful and he's that unassuming presence that's always there, but never in the way. And Mr. Holland? I truly believe that every time I hear him, his playing recalibrates my soul! Prime Directive, and Metamorphos are my absolute favorite Dave Holland pieces to hear live! MAGNIFIQUE GENTLEMEN!!!
He breathes out music. He is clearly a prodigy. When music sweeps over your soul so powerfully, you can’t help but make sounds. Joy radiates all over his face. AMAZING!
I only wish I could hear the actual song from the movie. My ears hear great music, but my ears aren't perceptive enough to even hear the four notes of the C maj 7 at the beginning of the song that I they're playing. Oh well. I'll try again.
