In the time of great depression dollar was tied to gold. So it wasn't silver depreciating to printable paper currency. But silver losing value to gold. It is still interesting why silver depreciated or why gold appreciated during the depression. I agree that food would be essential not precious metals. The question is did silver lose or gain purchasing power.
Super interessante informatie i.r.t.
Glad to hear your perspective on this because I feel thats one of the main reasons why people hoard silver coins; I hoard worthless paper in form of banknotes so I feel I can at least use it as toilet paper.
Ain't no disagreeing with the numbers and facts from those days. It would only make better trade barter in times of need like some other people have commented. That being said : I would prefer other commodities indeed like a piece of land that has an output of food, near a tract of water which is more valuable during times of trouble. I don't have this yet, but next to a bit of silver I would also stock up on other commodities like tobacco / alchohol. There will be plenty of people willing to trade their silver for some cigarettes or alchohol 😁
So i guess i better make a video this summer on how to grow tobacco plants and how to cure the leafs :) And maybe i should shine up the old still as well . During WWII Tobacco was better then money
@@SquareCoinTalk Why not on the "make whatever channel" perhaps ? 😁 I actually tried growning tobacco plants a couple of times but didn't work out well that time. Think I could manage it now. Hahahaha... I actually know how to make Mead and got a lot of equipment for it. Was a phase that I was into the making of it, all though I'm not really a drinker. My grandfather when he came back from forced labor in Germany, went into the black market (mainly tobacco) and made some good money out of it. What he didn't do properly was to turn his black earnings into "honest money in the bank at the end of the war. So after WW2 he was left with worthless money. They used it than to plaster it on the walls 😁
1: If the US dollar suffers an inflationary collapse then people will be desperate to store their wealth in something that isn't rapidly becoming worthless. That means the demand for precious metals will rise dramatically, meaning the price (specifically as in how many goods and services it can purchase rather than just how many dollars you could exchange it for) will go up dramatically. 2: What you're not factoring into the chart you're showing of silver's price going down during the Great Depression is that the Great Depression was a deflationary depression. This means that the US dollar's purchasing power rose dramatically. That's not our concern this time around.
It is silver price vs gold. Usd is not a gold backed anymore. And you missed 1 reason for depression - death of fiat. It is not about getting rich but about having something valuable to exchange it for bread. Noone will give you bread for paper with image of dead president.
