Mein Leben mit meinem Mann und meinen Kindern war sehr schön, aber keiner von ihnen teilte meine Vorliebe für Nana Mouskouri und Harry Bellafonte. I understand the point she was trying to make about the expectation of the entertainment industry of a woman looking a certain way. But it broke my heart of her description of being a “big girl” and arguing isn’t it better to be able to sing than being “ good looking” . You would have thought she was morbidly obese, and a troll. There was nothing wrong with her! They never did like glasses, and she was very near sighted-but contact lenses took a while before they became available and had their own issues for the wearers. Pressure even then. We didn’t do that with male performers. Over the years some look like they have rolled out of bed to get up on stage! But it was about their ability. And I’ve always looked at that with performers. Wonderful performers we’ve had, especially early performers that were recorded. Thank goodness they didn’t have to fit a certain expectation!
Her grace, her beauty, her voice captured me many years ago. Now, as the leaves wither and fall from my tree of life, I love her still. My cap, my cape, I doff to her.
I'm Greek and I can tell you with absolute conviction, she has one of the clearest voices, ever. However, she doesn't have the capacity to emerge, seed feelings to the audience. At least to the Greek audience. Greek songs are usually the epitome of different feelings. From happiness and love to death and speaking to our old Gods and fairies (which were Nymphs, the grand daughters of Oceanus, hence our word for "water" comes for her names in Greek). I don't know how she sounds to your foreign ears. Just to imagine, while she's clearly top-notch, Greeks usually listen mostly to only one song of hers. "Πέφτει βροχή" (Rain Falls/It's Raining), additionally, this particular song has great words, it's like a poem which helps my point. =SOPW7QpaIRo

I first heard nana when I was in grade 7. I was hooked on her beautiful voice,but also her sweet and gentle manner. From then one I was always lucky enough to get to see her every 2 years when she would come to Canada. I always was able to also get to see her back stage where she would sign all my album covers. She made feel so special.She always remembered my name would have photos taken. I always would bring photo from each concert past for her to sign. I now am 60 years old and still have a very deep respect for her. We will never see another Nana Mouskouri.
For us the children of the early seventies, Nana remains all that was graceful, the epitome of beauty in a world that was soon to change forever…she remains so, every time the record starts to spin on the gramophone
