The problem is that tightening the screws not only adjust up and down, but as the rail is pulled down onto the base, if the rail or base is tilted by any amount, it''ll also twisting the rail. To get them perfect is enough to drive anyone nuts, and it's good case for making it "good enough" and then moving on.
