The South African Embassy in Manila is a disgrace. The Filipina (not South African) woman who one deals with there, Leila Tostudio, is grumpy, rude, unhelpful, unprofessional and makes it vitually impossible to get a visitors visa for South Africa. The embassy don't answer their phones or put you on hold. This embassy is a disgrace to South Africa and certainly does not promote tourism and relations, as the ambassador claims. I hold her responsible for this situation. Get rid of Leila Tostudio and get the embassy more service orientated! You are causing a lot of damage to our country, South Africa!
You refer to the misplaced sense of Nationalism,and go on to touch on subjects like the security of tenure problem, compassion issues that bog down the collective ability of citizenry to apply the law correctly. Like yourself I have been exposed to the Philippine way of life for decades and am amazed to see an expat up to his ears in efforts to bring about, at least in perspective meaningful change. I have lost many friends over the past 30 years who died here in the Philippines because they embraced the country, the system, and the way, while not approving of corrupted and broken practices of the country. Lifestyle, accidents, lawlessness, and victimization due to jealous Filipinos detesting a foreigners success, has led to needless and mindless murders, assassinations, and jailing on false charges. It seems you have been more fortunate, and hope you are able to continue with your Inquirer column, with the hopeful insights you provide. Like you I will look forward to meaningful change by my jaundiced eye tell me that nothing significant will change in the years to follow, and your comments from 30 hears ago will be reused once again in 20 years from now.
A delightful interview. A rare member of India's Core Diplomatique. Kudos to you Raju Mandhyan. His Excellency Amit Dasagupta is one of the few Indian Ambassadors to the Philippines, I am proud of. I can recall HE Raghunath and Syamala Cowsik as being good Ambassadors. The rest are nondescript.
