I can't help to believe that the men who still believed in humanity and crossed their "red lines" to extend a hand of friendship knew more than what their leaders thought they did. I wish they could have all laid down their weapons and walked away. It would have sent such a resounding message to the world - "NO, we are not doing this." But they are friends forever, in heaven. Those who in the emptiness of their hearts want war and control over others are probably still fighting each other in hell. They could have so much more if they would just let go of their pride.
Can't say I enjoyed this somber song or the movie.I visited many of the sies, like the Somme and Ypres long ago. I have been a member of Vets for Peace for 30 years. Vera Brittain wrote Testament of Youth , her memoire of WWI and her trenchant remarks of War. It was rebublished in 1978 when I read it and II am rereading it again as The Unholyland erupts once more.
While we all hear drums of war again I wish the very best to all the peoples who are strong enough to believe in peace. May God, good fortune, the universe or whatever you love keep an eye on you
missing Gail Halvorsen,a pilot who flew a Rosinenbomber to West Berlin in 1948/49 during the Luftbrücke (Operation Vittles) his Ammo were Candys for the childs in Berlin. Dear Gail Rest in Peace. I will never forget you
At 3:50 I knew those soldiers once. They were my brothers and sisters in my unit. I miss them so very much... 40th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, Bene Factum.
It really is sad that all them men in world war 1 and world war 2 had to go through this much stress of not dying and may not even make it back to their families 😞😫😢😢😢😢😭😭😭 but soldiers and navy or air force soldiers are one of my most favourite kind of people, hero’s because “no matter how scared they are, they will not back down and they will fight until their last breath if they’ need to” to all the soldiers out there then, and now, rest in peace and god bless, I pray you make it back home safe and if you are watching down in heaven don’t worry your families and friends know you are hero and you will always be remembered for that thank you for protecting my country and your country 🙏🏻🙏🏻👼🏻😇
About 6 on the British side and 3 which skipped much stronger mail control and press censorship on the French and German side (that's what the director of the movie Christian Cafion said in the DVD extras). Maybe they have retrieved more in the meantime...Also there were several truces/fraternisations not only in 1914 apparently!
Never let someone say things like "real men used to go to war, unlike today". The men who were in the Trenchs on Christmas of 1914 showed that true human nature isn't about waging war...it's about wanting peace. Let war only ever happen for when peace must be restored, until the day when it is no longer needed. We will always have conflicts with one another...but that doesn't mean you can't remember their human...just like you.
The fact that this entire story is about how pointless war is yet half of the video shows pictures of volunteers who go to war into foreign countries for their own profit makes it kind of weird...
Most did not know why they were going to war. Some out of a misguided sense of patriotism; some because their friends were going and they did not want to be left behind; some because they thought it would be exciting; some because it would bring honor to them and their families and many other reasons. But I doubt that most of them served for profit. A vast majority of them expected that the war would be very short and they would be home by Christmas. They did not understand the horror war is. They had seen so many of their family and friends needlessly killed By Christmas, the knew that they did not understand what the war was for. Of course, I am saying this about the lower ranks which this video depicts. Thank you for your comment.
I am Polish and I have lost a lot of my family at the hands of the Germans, but I have tears in my eyes when German soldiers depart in cattle cars and sing the melody of Scottish colleagues, whom they have an absolute order to shoot after reaching a new location. Every war is stupid and pointless. It only brings suffering to peaceful people. Like now in Ukraine
