I was born at Hamot Medical Center, grew up in Erie. I moved away due to military service. I've learned so much history about my hometown thanks to you guys. I always come to visit every July. You guys really mean something. Thank you so much!
Excellent Series! I was born in Hamot Hospital in 1946, and left Erie for the Navy in 1965. I Haven't been back since. Thanks for the ride home. Please continue this series!
I worked here for almost 10 years starting in 2009. Got to take a walking tour of the Whacky shack with the lights on. I remember being told that the “haunted” knocking door scene right after the first spinning tunnel was actually a door from Alex Mueller’s house that was located on or near the park. He was the previous owner of the park before Mr. Nelson and Mr. Nelson’s adopted father.
I was there the day they located the bodies ..everywhere the rods crossed, a mark was placed , and it was 95% or better accuracy somewhere I have a pic with myself, my grandfather, the coroner and somebody else holding the top of a skull.
My grandparents had a camper there back in the 80's. Spent my summers at Sara Coyne. Was definitely in that arcade a LOT. Spent a lot of grandma's quarters on Track and Field and Yie Ar Kung-Fu. Thanks for the stroll around memory lane.
I was just back in Erie this past weekend for a Wedding. I lived in Erie on West 7th Street until my parents moved to NJ. We went to the beach on the Peninsula for a couple of hours on Saturday. I enjoy your videos ... at first I did not like your new format ... but it has grown on me. Good Job!
Oh guys this is one of my favorite spots so much history and you can almost feel it in the ground. Do want to point out that you can walk down summerheim drive all the way to the bay. Believe the sign you saw was no trespassing in the actual pumping house grounds but I've walked down there many times and there isn't any no trespassing signs down there. I could be wrong but I think you can totally access it by foot they just don't want you driving down there. Keep up the great work love these new videos!
We walk in Scott Park a lot and take the lesser traveled side trail down to Sommerheim Drive. It's just past the main building. Obviously you can't take a vehicle down there anymore, but we walk down Sommerheim to the bay all the time with our dog. I've seen others down there as well.
The smaller building was a boathouse. The City of Erie Water Department had a wooden cabin cruiser for use to check the water intakes in the lake. They sold it or gave it away in the early 2000’s. It was being stored at Anchor Marine while someone was refurbishing it. I’m not sure what happened to the boat after that. The pool at the Chestnut Street Water Treatment Facility was open until the early 1970’s. One of my neighbors was the head lifeguard there. His name was Budny, and I believe he was the uncle of Pat Budny, who was one of the first people to swim across the lake (the one that Budny Beach is named after).
Thanks for the walk in the lush green, so much a part of my childhood...much prettier than my current brown, dusty area in New Mexico. You'remaking me want to move home to Erie. ❤
I used to play by the pump station when I was a kid (my dad worked for the old Erie Water Department). A little west of the pump house there used to be the wreck of a fair sized wooden boat that was beached below the bluff.
I have noticed two more of those small cement piers that you pointed out that are possibly for stairs, a bit west on the bluff. They are near the Sara's campground property line. Possibly the remnants of the stairs down to Massasauga Point?
