While not mental math I observed some fast math in Japan in 1965. I was in the Navy and the ship stopped in Japan for a few days, so I went shopping mostly in electronics stores. The salespeople in the Japanese stores were not using calculators but abacuss. I knew what an abacus was but had never seen one used. These Japanese had been using them since childhood and were masters at it. I could not believe how fast they could move those beads on the abacus and have a mathematical answer. It was as you say faster than a calculator.

What you said about having good math handwriting being different or not mutually exclusive with having good general handwriting makes a lot of sense. I have really nice handwriting but the moment numbers are brought in it looks like a child wrote it, and im unsure why, could have to do with the way my math skills were neglected when i was young.
