I use to think that the Thais have nothing in common with China and did not have a northern origin as the traditional Thai clothing these days seem to resemble more of India. But by looking at this traditional clothing, I realize how similar they dress like the ethnic minorities of China, scraps of differently design fabrics here and there all sown together onto a single outfit. Now it makes sense to me.
There's a common misconception that people make about Thai culture and that it's a single identity, and actually Thai is not an ethnic group but rather a nationality. Like China, Thailand is a multiethnic nation. When you think of Thai people, you are most likely referring to the Siamese people who have a significant influence over the country's overall language, politics, culture, and identity. They are the major ethnic group in Thailand. The Siamese (and all Tai-Kradai speaking people for that matter) who migrated from present-day Southern China were influenced by Indian culture through cross-cultural exchange with the Khmer people, whose own culture was heavily Indianized in years prior. The dress and culture in this video is actually that of the Tai Lue people, whose original homeland is centered around Xishuangbanna (Sipsongpanna). The Lue are closely related to other "Tai" ethnic groups like the Lao, Phutai, Phuan, Tai Nuea, Tai Yai, Tai Khun, and Tai Yuan (Northern Thai/Lanna Thai) peoples. The more north you go, the more "Chinese" influence there is. Likewise, the more south you go, the more "Indian". Hence, why this region is often called Indochina.
@@justinnakhonthap9836 Yes Justin. You are correct. The northern Thais are not as well known especially here in the west. Westerners like to showcase the Aryan legacy or anything to do with it as a race of brown looking people. But we know that's not entirely true. Even the Miao people are southern Chinese but they also live in SEA as well and have always mingled with the Thai-Kradai people especially the Dais and Gaoshan of China. They all fashionably influence each other and have a lot of Han Chinese DNA.
