I have no experience in anything related to fifo but I I can easily learn. My only concern is that I am not an Australian and my English level is not really good. I have studied a totally different thing Compute Science but I want to get any fifo job before I proceed doing anything else. Do you think you could give an advice or something? I can see a solar farm worker or a drilles is a good options as a beginner. Also having a working holiday visa the best choice of foreigners is to start working in a farm since it is considered easier to be accepted there.
G’day mate, I’d say your best bet is your search. “Entry Level mining roles” would have to be the most simple way into the industry. You won’t need any special skills, but you will have competition, so you want to be able to sell yourself and be happy to give anything a go (they will train you). Also look for “shutdown work”. Getting into the mines, they’ll be looking at workers willing to work longer-term, unless you can find a short contract job to suit how long you plan to be on the job.
Hey boss. I am 23 years old from Germany and have a mechanic education and several welding licenses for Mig in steel welding and smaller qualifications such as a forklift driver's license and car driver's license. I have almost 6 years of professional experience in the metal sector. Do you think it is possible if I still have the necessary tickets and course in Australia that I would have a chance of getting into the field? Thanks in advance. (I planing to work and stay in Australia permit if its possible)
You’d need to meet the trade requirements in Australia to get the full job, so I’d say there will be trade specific training to match, that would be the hardest part. I’m sure someone else can add to that, but you’re well on the way to being there. Sorry @Kamov, I can’t convert yours to English for some reason. Something like “foreigners in the mining industry don’t have a chance”?
The highlight of fifo is what's on the menu at the dry mess or having your shitty 4 mid strength cans a night 😅 If it weren't for the few hundred bucks extra a week no one would do it.
How’s it going mike , do you think it’d be possible to wear a mask to prevent yourself from toxins I’m also thinking of getting into the industry. Thanks
my entire site is australian. theres nobody that isnt born here that works here lol. everyone got their job from knowing someone. U cannot just walk into a 150k yr job as a backpacker/traveller just being realistic, maybe a min wage cleaning job or dishwasher they hire people from other countries
Help Some 2 1/2 years ago I was held at the train crossing when the revs increased by about 300rpm, stayed there for a minute or two then returned to normal. This progressed to jumping 300rpm whilst driving at a steady speed up to a position where it was almost undrivable. In my worst experience, everything was fine until for 20 miles when the revs jumped to 3000rpm with only the slightest of pressure on the accelerator. this persisted for 5 miles then cleared and everything was fine. I replaced the MAP, ERG, crank position and throttle position sensors without success, although the engine did run a bit smoother. I also had access to a second ECU which again did not help. Then unrelated, the water pump broke and I had to be recovered. On explaining this running problem to the recovery man he said 'It's your turbo they stick' So whilst I had the front of the car out to replace the water pump I also refurbished the turbo but this did not completely resolve the condition so I replaced the MAF sensor with a recovered part and the car worked fine for over a year. Recently the problem returned and as I had expected the recovered MAF to fail I fitted a new MAF sensor which has not done anything for me. So I have been thinking that the problem has to be electronics as this occurs less than 10% of the running time. Did I do something unbeknown when I fitted the water pump and refurbished the turbo?
G’day Laurie, thanks for singing out. Sounds like you’ve got a recurring problem. It’s not happy, and progressing gets worse. They’re very difficult to hunt down when they play these games because it could be a multitude of things. They can be very frustrating. You’ve done the right thing to use a process of elimination. Sadly, the issue is still there. I’d only be guessing, being a diesel is also a different ball game to me, but nonetheless the symptoms can be applied both ways. If it were me I’d be looking at an air leak in the engine’s intake system. It sounds like it only happens occasionally, so perhaps an intake line/pipe after the throttle body. I’m not sure if the diesels have an “idle air intake valve” like the V8’s, but I’d be starting there. Like with the air suspension, you can use soapy water to find a system leak for the engine intake system too, so when the high idle issue returns, you can give it a spray to locate the leak. The rpm will drop when it meets the sprayed water. Otherwise mate, I hope it’s nothing too crazy!! Hope life been of some assistance.
Hey mate what’s your thoughts on underground training’s new starters course, supposedly it give you the knowledge to set yourself apart from new starters trying to become a driller offsider
G’day mate, I can’t say I’ve had anything to do with them. Training is always a good thing though, so if they can put you ahead of the rest, then it’s going to help you land a job. See what you can find on the internet and narrow down some searches to find what’ll help you gain the advantage as an offsider. It can be used as an entry-level role in some places.
What really does it for me is i put on my head phones open windows let some cool breeze in and just play those vintage 40's, 50's and 60's music really low and focus on the music and you'll slowly feel yourself falling deeper into sleep mode 😴
Paying with cash is always the quick and easiest way to go, saves you the headaches and of having to worry about payments and interests. I'd want to get an RV and with all the necessary amenities and also saves you paying thousands in rent when you can use that to put a down-payment on a house, buy a cheap car and live within your means while saving shit ton of money. While others are blowing their money on traveling, cars and other expensive shit and falling into debt, you on the other hand have the comfort of knowing your way ahead of the game saving up thousands of dollars for the future because we all have retire one day and unlike the others you have a big pool of money to fall back on
Hello boss...I have some questions about fifo. I'm from south africa and I wanna join Fifo How does it work...are they paying for my traveling flying me for free? Help me with some questions
G’day mate, yes and no is the right answer here. Firstly, if hired in Australia for a mining job, you will have to do the VISA thing and live in Australia to be considered for a job in the industry. You will also require the skills to apply for whichever job you apply for as well - they do not simply employ people randomly. Skills play a very big part in finding work in the industry, plus there is quite a lot of competition for mining jobs. Just to be clear - if you got a job in the Australian mining industry, they will not pay workers to live in a different country. You will need to live in Australia.
Hi mate, Do mining company's often sponsor foreign nationals say someone like myself here in fiji with a trade in heavy diesel repair/ maintenance looking to join the aussie mining industry? Thanks, cheers 🍻
G’day mate, the sponsorships are usually sorted by the companies, so I couldn’t say who to chat to, I’m sorry. You should have a good chance finding work in the mining industry with your experience that will help you quite a lot on your own merits. If you jump on the internet and see what you can find, I think you’ll be surprised what you can achieve.
Hello Keithy sir, I'm going to join mining industry but don't know which Visa should I need and I'm from India so should I get the job first then process my visa or do I need Work permit Visa first then go ahead please sir elaborate the process I'm confused. Appreciate your help ♥️
G’day mate, good to see you 👍🏻 I’m not sure exactly which VISA you need, I’m not familiar with the VISA system. I would only be guessing if I was to say anything. Cheers Keithy
Great video. I’d love to become a heavy diesel mechanic and do fifo work. Is it possible to do a fifo apprenticeship? Did part of my light vehicle (mechanic) apprenticeship but really I want to go diesel. Any other tips for the diesel up in the mines? Cheers keith
Thanks mate, much appreciated. That’s a good question. There will surely be a few mines offering an apprenticeship on FIFO. It might be a good idea to have a good google to see what you can find - I can’t say I’ve had this question before! I know often the mines try to move apprentices close to the site until they’ve done their time. Jump on google and see what you can find. Keep in mind that they generally try to get their apprentices before the start of the annual intakes. I reckon you’re on a winner, just keep at it and have a regular look on seek.com and some of the mining companies’ websites to see what you can find 👍🏻
Cheers Keithy. Just another question mate. What do FIFO diesel mechanics do with their toolbox. Is it kept on site. Or does it have to be transported every FIFO roster? Out of all the possible mining jobs, are diesel mechanics still in good demand with a lot of work available? Cheers for your previous detailed response as well
If you’re on one site each roster, they will have a locker where you can keep stuff like your tool kits, that’ll save having to carry them each roster. Yes you’re right, diesel mechanics are a pretty good job to go for. Once you’re in - you’re in!
Thanks again keithy. So with heavy diesel in the mining industry would they take someone with experience working on trucks like you see on the road, or are they after people who have been plant mechanics? Am I also right to assume that a lot of equipment in the mining industry not go electric anytime soon (as opposed to cars which are constantly changing)? Thanks again mate
Good question mate. You won’t need to have experience operating machinery, as there are a lot of positions lately in the mining industry. You will still have to sell yourself though, as there’s still a market and they will look for the best candidates they can find. There is already quite a lot of electric mining equipment. There are heaps, in fact, but at this stage there are not millions of mines adapting them.
You could use that experience in the warehouses on a mine site. If you get yourself a forklift ticket that’ll boost your chances, and also talk yourself up on the job application.
There would be a few. It’s not the most popular job as a lot of fleets are sent to nearby towns for auto stuff, but there’s still quite a lot of mines servicing their own fleet.
G’day mate, your best bet is to narrow-down on your strengths and abilities, and target the mining jobs that require your skills. That will give you a great chance to find the right job, without too much hassle.
Mate I’ve had to do a huge catch up video run. Good to see the Ute off to a new home and just gone thru the clinical trial and post surgery one. She’s a solid improvement I reckon. Glad to see that things are pointing the right way. Which trial did you end up with? Pills or the jab? Glad to hear that adobe has also pulled their head out of their backside and sorted the software! I’ll raise a coffee from this side of the ditch. Pats for radar!
Cheers mate, good to hear from you 👍🏻 You’re not wrong, plenty has been going on lately. It was a sad day to see the Ute drive away, shed a tear I won’t lie there. The treatment is more than I was expecting. It’s a lot more intense than I expected to be honest. I don’t want to cloud the channel too much with it, but I’ll put an update in a few months. I’m on the pill treatment, thankfully. Cheers for raising a coffee mate! I’ll raise one too ☕️
@@Keithy_W glad all is well. ❤️ All good here too thanks, my brother started work as a heavy diesel fitter in port hedland two weeks ago, and absolutely loves it. 👍
Are there any jobs in fifo that involve the repair and maintenance of conveyors and such like. I’m a maintenance engineer in uk atm and that’s the kinda stuff I work on so looking to see if there’s any jobs that I could fit into with an nvq 3 in mechanical engineering maintenance. Or is it all just repairing plant when it comes to fitters/engineers
G’day mate, there are positions perfectly aligned with what you’d like to do, funny enough! Maintenance crews and technicians spend a lot of time around conveyor systems, and the like. It should be an easy google to find work doing that kind of work 👍🏻 You could also specialise in conveyor work as a contractor as well.
My pleasure mate. The usual fitter role is a lot more involved than that, which is where getting on as a contractor will probably help you get the other experiences that’ll get you a qualification. That’ll allow you to advance and climb the ladder, rather than sitting on an “entry level” role.
Hi Keithy, glad you eventually sold your ute, shame you had to deal with all the LOW LIFE FLOGS, plenty of them these days, they seem to reed like rabbits 😢 Hope your doing OK, and shame you had to sell your ute 😢😢 Speaking of FLOGS, I'm guessing thing's didn't end well with your supposed income protection insurance 😮, think you mentioned it in a video a year or more ago, and you were going to make another one, and name the SCUM company. Take Care. Cheers Rob and Shelly 😊😊
Thanks mate, you’re not wrong, it makes thing difficult. I’m glad it’s gone to a good owner, makes me happy. Yeah that was difficult too, but not to worry mate, it will all be good (you know I don’t give up easy haha) Good to hear from you both!
G’day mate, if you have a look through you’ll find I’ve done a few on the LPG setup over the years. A few even quite recently. I’ll try and find a link for you
Hey mate good subject, Being in my mid 50s male boilermaker in construction I was harassed in 2016 when I put up my hand for a safety role off the tools, (pet program of the construction manager) my supervisor and superintendent hated it, I had to move to another crew where the supervisor supported the program, even at that time the drugs were so bad, my supervisor admitted he was on ice and his partner was caught selling, they called for the nightshift scaffolders to front up for a drug test, hah most just left the job instead, you’ve probably got a few stories of your own, cheers.
G’day Kerry, thanks for your comment. It shows another side to the industry and a face to what has happened in your experience here too. I appreciate your comment. Sounds like you’re in a better place now too 👍🏻
Cheers for all the advice, 15 years old, going into a cert III in polymer processing. your videos have been an amazing help in getting me bags all set up
Hey Keith, really appreciate your videos. I am a 20yr old women new to working in mines and it's really reassuring knowing that there really are good guys in the industry that have a good head on their shoulders and are mature enough to give this advise. Its good to get advice and more reassurance around harassment in the workplace. Thank you
It varies between states. Some will accept two weeks straight, so will accept one week. Fatigue management is very important on a safety view. You become a risk to yourself and other workers with too much work on not enough rest.
Hey man any advice for an Italian that is not experienced and wants to start working with mining industry and FIFO? Maybe something like utility is a great start? I have a mechanical associate's degree and experience with lathe and CNC but I dont see it helping me too much. Any ideas about how to get experience as a mechanical fitter? Awesome video, hope you are doing great.
G’day mate, thanks for the message! You’ve got the right idea straight away! If you can land a utility role, or even a contractor job, that’ll get you in the door. If you could even get an adult apprenticeship that would be a good thing with your trade-type experience. Thanks heaps mate!
By the way, if you're in Australia and watching this, Aldi were selling these machines for $200...but, being Australia, no one bought them, and they're now going out the door for the ridiculous price of $79.95. That's $10 cheaper than a Sunbeam Aroma (a bog-standard drip brewer) from Hardly Normal. I've used both, and the Delonghi is far, far superior. Picked mine up yesterday.
@@Keithy_W I have experience driving forklift, reach trucks, I try to decide where I want to go, UK ot Australia, I like both of them, 4 years of driving license, I can be operator for any crane, thats easy to me
