WOW. I was glad to get Buy One,Get One packs of chicken breast@2,80 GBP per .4 kilo. today, 98GBP per.40 kg for cabbage. Tinned tomatoes .98-1.36 GBP each. I won't bore you with the rest.
Thanks for the heads-up - I will be off to Lidl tomorrow to buy that chicken, it's a really good price. I tend to do the same as you, marinade it, either chop or butterfly it before it gets bagged up individually so it's easy to defrost.
Brilliant! I learnt to fillet at school many decades ago and haven't done it much since then, so that's a great reminder of how to do it. Thanks, Ana. Love the fish fingers recipe too, although I'd probably make fish cakes with a crumb coating. :)
Thank you. 😊 you can still make stock even after baking the left overs. I didn’t as my husband only like fish as in fillets, no soups or stews or pies so stick no use to me 😁
I live in Dover and can get across the channel regularly for a wine top up. As for eating on board I always give that a miss. You found that out for yourself.
Buy in bulk, shop online, learn to bake your own bread. Pasta has “forever” shelf life. Corned beef is a great source of proteins when fresh meat is not available. Invest in a freezer where you can store bacon, meat, sausages when you buy them at a discount price. Stay safe people.
Having a good fish fillet knife can make all the difference. For home use I use the Dalstrong Shogun 6' Fillet knife and for outdoors fishing kit use the Helle Steinbit 155mm. The prices for these knives are now just ridiculous though and even ordering them will probably require an Internet purchase and the consequent hassle here in the UK.
That was very informative Ana, all I need to do now is learn to fish 🙂 I would have to put a blindfold on the fish first, couldn't be having that eye stare at me 😞
Peopel have no idea how easy some things really are to do. I am always shocked at how people are blown away and think they can't possibly do some things themselves. I never would have thought of fish fingers, but now I would be inclined to make fish patties, thank you for the idea. I make broth out of any scrap meat,(or vegetables). In fact, I have chicken bones and craps simmering right now, and there is a bag of pork bones and scraps in the fridge waiting their turn right now.
@@AnasFoodLifestyle I have a much-neglected food and easy entertaining blog that I started more than a decade ago because I found that people were often in awe of my homemade foods (or when I had my bakery/restaurant) and simple parties. They have no idea they can do it and most cookbooks, especially the celebrity ones in vogue, are overwhelming to them. God bless you.
OMG - worst trout we ever had was fresh caught at Thryburgh country park when we stopped over at the campsite and went fishing , think they had just dumped them in straight from a farm as they tasted like dirty feed pellets . A good enough fishery with cleaning stations and cooking area at the campsite = from water to pan in 15 mins , just they tasted awful ...
I never know what to expect next when I tune in here - you seem to cover every aspect of self-sufficiency. These skills were common-place in my grandmother's generation - but they seem to have been lost somewhere along the line. I tend to avoid buying whole fish as I tend to be a bit squeamish but recently I did buy a whole salmon from Morrisons for about £9 and I was surprised how far it went. Good idea to make fish fingers with the small bits, I would probably just have made a pate.
Wow! What a vast choice! Were our supermarkets anywhere near as well stocked even years ago before the dreaded B word? We used to go in the 90’s and early 2000’s and we once bought a milk pan (very like the posh make) still have it all those years on. Happy belated birthday btw, enjoyed the video 👍
One sneaky thing I've noticed is with 'price matching' (normally with aldi/lidl) - where the big 5 supermarket finds a product they are currently selling cheaper than aldi, for example, then increase that price and slap a 'price match' label on the new, more expensive item ! Technically not a lie but really underhanded tactics.
That pack of 5 crunchie toasts for £2 is amazing. So jealous! I buy bits like that here, but it's like £1.50 for one little packet or bag, so that stuff you got is an absolute steal at about 40p a packet. Well done.
I also used to buy cheapo wine bottles in France, purely because I liked the size or shape of the bottle, and I bought them to look pretty on the shelf, rather than for drinking. I moved recently, so had to chuck a load out, but I kept half a dozen of my favourite shaped bottles. They're over 20 years old. I have no idea whether this cheapo wine would be drinkable now??? I know wine is supposed to age well, but I dunno if that's the case for the cheapo wines. It would probably taste like vinegar now!
It's the combination of price up, size down: shrink-flation is now getting beyond a joke! Silly example, but my daughter likes the Natural brand Wiggly worms sweets as a treat - I think many have slithered out of the packet before they get put on the shelf! Snack sized items are now more like "1 bite" sized items!

@@AnasFoodLifestyle I think the feeling is generated by the passage of time and subconscious analysis of news. Communist government with a megalomaniac leader in UK ,who wants a war with Russia ( allegedly). Nightmare budget on Halloween ( don't tell me that's a coincidence) .American election, what ever the outcome I think there will be trouble. Ukraine/Russian war .Israel invades Lebanon. China has major financial problems as does the USA and UK .I think the term is "The perfect storm."
There are already too many who are struggling with food price inflation. Im also freezing more, particularly meat. It might be worthwhile collecting jars (and new lids for them) from friends and family, especially the pasta sauce jars, for future preserving projects.
Ah, great minds think alike, lol. I've recently started concentrating on freezing too, putting home-made soups, casseroles and baked goods into me-sized portions along with meat, fish and veggies. And still buying lots of tinned goods for storage. Thank you for the inflation information, Ana. It's very useful. :)
Re inflation I only noticed today that the small fresh cream I get from my Asda delivery is 60p less than my local Spar - £1-35 instead of a whopping £1-95.
I keep turning my tins every week I’ve a freezer drawer full of chocolate Stocking up on everything And learning how to can for long term storage Going to attempt tomatoes this week
Hubby went to our local store for some butter £2.80 for 1 pack. ! Dozy begger never checks prices, I could have slapped him! 😆I stocked up on olive oil and I’ve not bought any for nearly 2 years. I’ve also converted to cooking coconut oil (no taste or smell) for those who do t like coconut. It was£5 for a 1kg tub not sure how much it is now. I’ve also been going back to the old days and using lard. However I confess I still prefer butter to fry my veg. Thanks for the heads up on cocoa powder, I forgot about that for making shelf stable hot chocolate drink.

You always have to look at prices nowadays . I pretty much know most of prices by heart so any odds stand out right away . I’m same I have loads of olive oil and not bought any for years. Coconut oil is very good to cook with 😊
🫒I give a wry smile to the reports coming out of Italy with regards to this seasons olive oil production. They touch briefly on the climatic challenges faced this year, as they cannot be hidden. But slick marketing in an effort to stabilise the business as a whole, is being created by a new interest in a region previously not considered. Without any previous years to call upon, middlemen want you to take a leap of faith in just a projected description. A crop failure is a crop failure, no matter how much spin you put upon it.🕊️
My wife and I am putting all our efforts into food prepping, we do without new clothing, eating out etc , our car is 20 years old, after its MOT we deal with any advisories and this year we changed the cam belt and last year had the cooling system flushed, prevention is cheaper then cure. Every penny spent on prepping is an insurance, you can not eat money.
