It was "true" stereo on BSSM (incl. Under The Bridge) though, because the DOD FX65 has two wet outputs. Actually, that was not truly "true stereo" either because that would entail two independent chorus circuits (like the DOD FX67 has). In the case of the FX65 it's only one chorus circuit with inverted phase on the other output ("fake stereo"). So there's three possibilities. Wet/Dry (like the CE-1), Wet/Wet with inverted phase (like the DOD FX65), and true stereo (like the Boss Dimension C). John never used a "truly true stereo" chorus afaik.
@@BlackOpsBanana6309 yes! I’ve tried a few chorus pedals over the years and sometimes cheaper isn’t better. The joyo analog chorus was too noisy. But the mxr chorus here is great and affordable. Also tone city angel wing is supposedly a great chorus and it’s very small.
This can be easily proven with the Guitar Hero multitracks for the album. John used the chorus pedal to split his signal to the two Marshalls he was using, a guitar head and a bass head. The stereo guitar tracks consists of a darker tone coming from the bass amp on one side and a brighter tone from the guitar amp on the other side. The CE-1 outputs one dry signal and one wet signal. The FX65 outputs two wet signals. If John had used the CE-1, then one side would not have a chorus effect. As it turns out, all the stereo guitar tracks on that album have chorus coming from both amps, so it definitely was the DOD.
@@n.senada 👏 that makes the most sense. The only thing I would ask is if they recorded in stereo, but mixed back to mono, like they did for the Californication album. If that were the case, then it’s possible it was the ce-1. But honestly I’m with you. I’ve listened to a video on RU-vid comparing the two and the fx65 sounds just like the record to me.
They didn't mix back to mono because when you split those stereo guitar tracks to two mono channels then one channel has an audibly bright tone and one has a dark tone, which is consistent with JFs description.
Classic stereo sounds super close to his tone on under the bridge I currently have been programming my boss ME25 to play under the bridge and this had been an amazing help thank you
@@andrewsouthern3517 nice! The boss me25 is a classic! I never tried the chorus on that but I bet since its Boss brand, it sounds close to the original ce 1
@@granmasterlincoln So what you are hearing in the video with the “Classic” chorus is a stereo signal path (with two separate amps), one amp just has the guitar signal (no chorus) while the other amp has chorus effect. When you hear “True” stereo chorus in the video, you are hearing the same stereo rig (two amps) but both amps have the chorus effect, and the chorus they produce are not identical, so they sound like two different chorus pedals used at once. Some people love that lush, wet sound of true stereo chorus, but I like the classic stereo chorus, because it’s a little more natural sounding, like the original CE-1. The helix has the option to do either, and since I’m a John Frusciante fan, I try to emulate what he uses, the classic mode.
Hello bro, I love your channel, I wanted to ask you about the chorus, how can this or others be used to enhance the sound like John does from the ce1, lowering everything and only leaving the level high? or do you recommend another pedal to get it clean? thank you in advance
@@matiascisneros8545 thanks for kind words. So in theory if you turn the high and low cut knobs down, you would have more of the original signal. But I can’t remember if the knobs are reversed, in that if you turn them all the way up, they may actually be reducing the cut. You’ll have to experiment. Then as far as turning down the rate and depth, it will be a really low speed & effect, possibly sounding more like a flanger effect, & with the level high may increase that effect. It’s also possible it’ll just sound clean and not much effect at all except maybe a boost in volume. I sold my chorus pedal for a Helix Floor unit. I will try the same settings on it and let you know!
@@granmasterlincoln yea I think I’ve seen Dave do it too. Honestly, if you play with this particular jam, playing this part as intensely as John, you will (IN FACT) drool 😂. Playing this cat screeching bends at the end take a little bit a finger strength.
Do you use irs or stock cabs? When I try your settings on my hx stomp dont sound as good as yours. Any recommendations would be appreciated❤ I can't get a good tone out of my hx stomp.
Interesting.🤔 I’m not using any IR’s. Make sure you’re using the right cab that I’m using here. Also make sure you’re matching the high cut option on your cabs to match mine here. Very important. On my helix output (volume knobs) I have my main output and headphone output set at 12:00 (50%). Not sure of the hx options on that but that could be why it’s different and possibly simple solution. Also my guitar is fairly high output pickups compared to my other single coiled guitars, so my guitar tone may be “hotter” than yours if you have low output pickups. Also, playing a guitar with humbuckers will sound very different than most single coils. So my recommendation would be that if you matched my settings perfectly try this: 1) if your tone is too clean sounding, your pickups are lower output, which the simple fix would be increase the drive on your compression block until it sounds more like it should. 2) if your tone is too dirty sounding, simply reduce compression drive and see if that helps clean it up a bit. Also make sure to hard pan the amps to left and right. If you can’t do that part, you could run just one of these amps in mono to save space and it’ll sound close enough. That’s what I do on most of my Frusciante patches so save room for effects and it sounds fine without panning L&R stereo amps. The compression is a huge part of his tone so I would mess around with the drive, bass, treble, output on the compressor block. Let me know if that helps. You can also message me on Instagram and send pics of your setup and I’ll help you that way. 😎 IG Tylergray333
Tysm! I'm currently using one speaker. Which Amp do you recommend I copy? Do you think I should run the effects in stereo or mono? Thank you for all the help
@@erickpadilla8989 that’s ok! You can just use one of these two amps. I have a few Frusciante presets that only use one amp. They are both so similar. I’d try each one by itself and see which one you like. And by the way, californication album was recorded with two amps but then summed to mono so you’ll sound more like that album if you use both amps. It’s a win/win!
Hello! I really liked the video and the technical approach. These sounds are magical! Can I suggest some Red Hot songs for you to do a similar analysis? I like some with very rich effects... (Sorry, my English isn't perfect, lol)
@@frusciantegeartone Well, I know many with sounds that I consider fantastic... including b-sides, lesser-known songs, and solos in shows (Frusciante was good in concert, lol) But I'll leave a list below of some that have interesting instrumentals... Time Death of martian My boy, my girl Save this lady Goodbye Angels Minor Thing Tearjeker And these three here, below, that I would highlight more I could have lied ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vvfWewLU7N0.htmlsi=4AuT5zLL0K2dtzOa This one is special. This time I don't highlight a small sound, I just... highlight the solo itself. Her solo leads to paradise! I'm not a great understanding of instruments, but I believe that Frusciante used some distortion to give this wonderful effect! Solo between 1:58 and 2:39. It gives a feeling of echo, it gives the feeling that we are listening in a wide space... and from there the mind travels, lol Even you brutus ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TE4e3hmnDNs.htmlsi=fEaTzMWdIah0t3dD This is the same thing. It has a very top sound...the drums give a good body to the music, the construction is very good...but there is a discreetly placed sound that makes a big difference...it's like the right seasoning in a tasty dish. It's the little guitar sound that starts right after the drums and lasts two seconds, between 0:21 and 0:23... and then repeats itself throughout the song. It's a detail that makes a lot of difference.
What do u recommend i use for that classic Frusciante sound? I've been trying to build a Frusciante preset on my hx stomp. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Your the best frusciante tone chaser on youtube❤
@@linkedw wow, thank you for the kind words. 🙏 If I had an hx stomp, I would actually buy the boss ds-2, some big muff clone fuzz pedal or boss fuzz, and then the Ibanez wh10v3. I would run them in that order into your hx stomp. Then use the stomp for effects and amp stuff. If you want to solely use the hx stomp though, here’s the order I’d try: 1st - dees one distortion or line 6 distortion. Both can sound similar to his ds2. 2nd -Dark dove fuzz. Could put it 1st if you like. 3rd - Vetta Wah 4th - Always on boost compression (set with some drive) 5th - Dotted 1/8th note delay 6th - Spring reverb (‘63 is good) 7th - 70’s chorus 8th - Brit Plexi Brt amp (set clean but edge of breakup) I have some videos on setting up the amps if you haven’t already checked them out. I’d set one preset to turn on distortion, reverb and chorus and then another preset of the same setup to turn on distortion, fuzz, and delay. You could set up about 3 to 4 presets of the same setup but to change the modulation effects. Hope that makes sense.
@@frusciantegeartone Do you recommend I use irs instead of stock cabs? Do you also have any recommended settings for the amp? Sorry for questions Im new to the hx stomp.
@@superuser13 the price has went up on these quite a bit now and since the tuners need replacing, it’s almost not worth it unless you already have parts laying around. It was a fun journey but for the time spent and money I could have easily bout a classic vibe.
@@frusciantegeartone Im an artist so was thinking of doing one mainly because I could a totally custom paintwork through out. Definitely would get different tuners and bridge tray.
How so? What am I wrong about? 😂 I ended up sending it back and getting a new unit. I have an updated video and lots of new material using the helix (huge fan of now). But I definitely had a faulty one. Not just the squeak but the calibration on the expression pedal was completely out of whack and when I got a new unit, it worked fine. Either a software or hardware issue for sure. As far as dsp, it’s still somewhat of an issue. Running two separate amps, in stereo hard panned left and right only leaves a certain amount of effects in stereo (which I needed many for what I was trying to do). My solution to dsp was instead of having a John Frusciante patch of ALL his effects, I decided to do certain album/era’s since effects were so diverse. I could even set certain patches for one song like Dani California, which the amount of effects he used in studio was quite a bit. But it still doesn’t work perfectly for me, but good enough.
Thank you very much for this tutorial, I was looking for presets and guide for this tone and nothing convinced me, but the tone I get with this tutorial on the POD GO is amazing, I can only emulate one type of amp but that's enough for me. If you keep uploading this kind of content it would be amazing, thanks a lot.
So glad it helped. I’m actually just running one amp and it does “the thing”. Dave Simpson taught me that you don’t need two amps to sound like Frusciante, and that’s stands true for the helix. I usually use the Brit plexi bright. I’ve tried some other amps that also get close and possibly better. I’ll definitely make more videos comparing them. Thanks for watching and stay tuned 🎸
You got an extra sound for free: "pedal wiki-wiki", and you still complain! 🤣 There has to be some type of lubricant or fix for that, contact them and ask. As per running out of DPS, did you try the latest firmware?
😂 never looked at it like that, you’re right!! The squeak I could prolly fix. The 0-100% expression pedal calibration issue is definitely a software issue. My m13 used to do that as well with an external (fully functional) expression pedal. As far as dsp, I did try the latest firmware. But I figured out ways around it, since I was expecting a lot from the unit in my signal path(s). I returned this one for a new one and I absolutely love it. I’m sold for life. I made a video update on my channel if you’re interested. Thanks for watching and giving your humor in a bad situation, it actually is a nice thing!
