This is what I imagine it would be like if the armchair generals had to go up against the real thing... in any sport. Separately, Japan were very brave but it was way to early for them to try. Good on them though!
Leigh Davis had a big Sx Nations in 1996 and everyone was talking about him going on the 1997 Lions tour. Then he disappeared without trace. What happened?/
All the Rugby League boys came back to Union including Scott Gibbs and Alan Bateman, who cemented the Wales spots. Leigh was also a social player more than a professional player, his antics when partying are pretty legendary.
I'm in my late 40's now. When I think back, it was absolutely mental these all out brawls where everyone joined in! To be fair, 90% of the game was fair play and I have great memories of my teammates and opponents. But, there was definitely a 10% who didn't always share that view all the time!
The thing that I remember about this game is an interview the rugby pundits wanted with Neil Jenkins after the Welsh victory. I cannot find the interview anywhere but after winning 22 points for Wales & at the zenith of his career Neil was sorry he could not spare the time to chat as his Nan was not well & he had to get home to see her! No ego. No grandstanding. A true Welsh rugby hero.
