man, joe's death really got to me. Even though i knew from episode 1 what was gonna happen cause it got spoiled for me. The question of wether or not he was going to die wasn't even the main focus as his fire burned on. By the end of the show, it was would he fully ignite, seeing a man die happy doing what he loved, in the bliss of violence. inspires and intimidates the mind.
The way the art and shading is done can only be left to interpretation. At 0:55, from a distance it looks like his eyes are closed, but at the top of the eyelid, there seems to be an impression of an iris present. Thus, one can only ask if he's awake or "sleeping". Can't really tell.
I feel like this could've been turned into an edit, if you cut off the part where he starts talking about Carlos, and instead shifted the scene to the last, where Joe burned his fire, until only pure white ash remained, and cut to different moments in the anime. That's my opinion at least. Regardless of that, it's a beautiful scene.
