This channel features a variety of outdoors and hunting-related topics, ranging from how-to videos on native crafts, wall tent camping, moose hunts, field preparation of game, trapping, use of drones, reloading and aspects of casting. Because I'm usually up to something, content is added frequently, but not unless I feel I have something useful or interesting to deliver.

What sets this channel apart from the usual is due to my wife. "Treaty Indian" (Canada), her side of the family puts a different spin on the way we hunt, when we hunt (she can do so all year), how we camp and how we handle game for consumption - both for the table and for use clothing. She is skilled in the traditional art of making moccasins, moss bags and such.

This is complimented by being licensed trappers and having a trapline of our own. That gives us the supply of pelts needed for native crafts. For a look at our trapline you can check out the video entitled, "An Introduction To Our Trapline."

I get a laugh out of all the comments regarding cast projectiles. How it’s a special balance of this that and the next. How it can be difficult to not lead your barrel. Look if you want to shoot lead look up powder coating. I personally use Eastwoods ford light blue powder coat. Since people have discovered powder coating and applied it to cast all the hard work has been eliminated. All a guy has to do is figure out his bore sizes. Size your cast powder coated projectiles 0.2 thousands over that. And don’t shoot them faster then 2500 fps. Zero leading great shooting projectiles it’s that simple.
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 8 дней назад
Powder coating has been a good entry point into the craft for many casters not yet experienced. And, since it works for them, they have little incentive to change.
@Johnny-jr2lq
@Johnny-jr2lq 8 дней назад
@@TheWaytoNativeChronicles I have become quite good at casting and powder coating. So much so that I’m considering trying the “traditional” methods simply to learn it. In you opinion do the “traditional” techniques have any pros to them over powder coating. People who I know that have transitioned from traditional methods to powder coating say it’s not even worth learning. But I see other people who refuse to go to powder coating. Some say they have the skills and tools to do it the old way and that’s why they don’t power coat. Others say they don’t want their ammo to look like lipstick. Personally l think that’s the silliest thing I have ever heard.
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 8 дней назад
@@Johnny-jr2lq thanks for posing that question. It's probably on a lot of peoples' minds. I started bullet casting for my .44 Magnum back in the 80's and, back then, it was pretty much assumed that, in order to do it right, you just bit the bullet and purchased a lubrisizer along with moulds in order to be completely equipped. And it was a steep learning curve because, back then, information (like RU-vid) wasn't available. But, over time, I worked things out and refined the process and developed very accurate loads that way (saving myself a lot of money too). Wheel weights were (and still are) a primary source of alloy. Now-a-days, wheel weights are not so easy to find and I think more people are recycling range lead and stuff like that which is generally pretty soft. Powder coating then came along and I think it really opened the door wide to people just starting out because they would need less equipment (like a lubrisizer, various size dies, micrometer and hardness testers) and not have to worry about leading if they didn't get things just right. More forgiving, I'd say. But for those of us who already knew how to produce bullets that would satisfy all our shooting needs, the traditional method remained superior. We'd adjust our alloys as needed and, for higher velocities, add gas checks (something I also make myself using a check-maker tool). For more extreme needs I will heat-treat the bullets using the oven method to increase hardness. Overall, especially for the bullets that don't need gas checks, the whole process if much cleaner and quicker. I hear all the time about people saying they prefer powder coating because they don't like the mess of traditional. That's because such people are using the Lee method with that messy Alox they shake the bullets in and most people aren't aware that's just one method. With traditional lubing (I make my own lube as well, by the way), I just run each bullet through the lubrisizer and it's sized and lubed in one pull of the handle (if a gas check is needed, that gets crimped on in the single step as well). No mess, no muss. So it just makes the task of producing good quality, accurate ammunition easier and less hassle, the way I see it. For a closer examination of what's involved, you might want to check out this video I made, demonstrating and timing the steps involved: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xP34TeM6wvM.html

EDIT: I didn't realize you'd produced a whole series of videos on the rifle--when I visit a channel that's new to me, I normally opt to see the "Videos" + "Latest" display. That is of course where the custom Ruger first caught my eye in your channel's homepage banner. Now that I have viewed a couple more of the videos dedicated to that rifle, and your loadings for it, most of my questions have been answered! I am still curious about the twist rate of the barrel if you wouldn't mind telling me that. (I'll edit the edit if I stumble across the information in another of your videos before you chance to see this and reply.) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello again Don! Since our exchange of thoughts on the restrictions that Canada places on private ownership of sidearms, and more specifically the hoops one need jump through in the great white north to obtain permission to carry a firearm for "wilderness protection" against, I presume, only furry predators, I've been intrigued by that handsome and, presuming again, custom-built Ruger Number 1 that is prominently featured on your channel's homepage. I had already formed the opinion that it must be chambered in .45-120 prior to seeing this video. Hah, It seems that I could have saved myself the online research intended to identify that disproportionally long case had I simply scanned through a few more of your listed videos! Oh well, exploration is often its own reward! It appears evident that you are not shooting the historical black powder loading. Yet, to my eye, the barrel appears long enough that I wonder if you had that BP load in mind when you built or specced the rifle? Do you mind disclosing the barrel length and twist rate? Incidentally, I got a chuckle out of your orange paint disclaimer! 😆 FYI: from what I've been able to glean online, Crooks used an unmagnified Eotech optic with a 4-mil dot. If your eyesight is anywhere near as good as my own was before I hit puberty, I'd say your iron sights had the edge over his setup! Despite his actions and intent, and with all due respect extended to Comperatore's family and the other victims of Crooks's apparent assassination attempt, I am not alone in feeling sorry for the kid. As one chipping away at the eighth decade of his own life, I do not expect definitive answers in the time remaining; thus, I suspect I will die harboring doubts that young Crooks acted alone or was not a sacrificial patsy.
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 16 дней назад
The barrel is 29” “Douglas” manufacture, 1 in 22” twist, specially selected for its straightness and uniformity of the lands and grooves - air-gauged. Can definitely use BP, but, aside from not wanting to deal with the corrosive mess BP leaves behind, I have no desire to use it. For me it is primarily a hunting rifle, so I reload it to maximize its power using cast bullets. It strikes me very odd that so little information has been released about the Crooks guy and his rifle, which definitely raises the question of what they're trying to hide.

@@TheWaytoNativeChronicles Thanks, Don. I see that you replied while I was adding an edit to my comment to explain that I had found your load data in another of your videos. I appreciate the response! I thoroughly understand your feelings about running black powder, especially in such a nice rifle. When I first noticed stainless steel firearms entering the market, my thoughts were "Who forgot to finish the guns?" With decades of living on the Olympic Peninsula, my appreciation of those "unfinished" firearms grew! I was a kid in middle school when JFK was assassinated, and that event still raises doubts. I don't expect to be above ground when the questions about Crooks's actions are all answered, if ever. Happy trails and good hunting sir.

I envy Canadians for their extensive wildernesses, especially the mountainous regions in the West, and their large populations of game animals, the latter of which is largely a consequence of a human population of only 1/10 that of the USA. I've seen remote country there that I would have been thrilled to settle on. However, I'm glad that I looked no further at emigrating to the country than to discover the extent of draconian firearms restrictions the government imposes on its subjects. What's alarming is how quickly types of firearms access has been denied to those north of the 49th parallel, let alone inhabitants of other English-speaking lands such as Australia and New Zealand. It does not bode a rosy future for advocates of personal liberty.
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 17 дней назад
Thanks for your comment. There are advantages and disadvantages, depending on where you live. For myself, if I had to trade for the wilderness access and opportunities we have, versus the gun laws the States have, I'd choose the former. The latter doesn't really impact my day-to-day life whereas the former adds to it enormously.

@@TheWaytoNativeChronicles First, I enjoy your videos and admire your lifestyle. Please don't think that I am criticizing either with what I am about to say. This could easily expand into a much wider-ranging* and more intense discussion than I have the energy for at this stage of my life, but I feel obliged to reply that if I was selfishly weighing personal hunting opportunities against the expense and bother of complying with Canadian laws that I find onerous I might have chosen same as you. However, as someone born in Germany, but raised in the USA where the constitution prohibits (ideally at least) the government from abrogating natural rights the issue is more fundamental to me: it is about RIGHTS as opposed to privileges. Sadly, I've witnessed Americans trending ever closer to accepting, some of them even clamoring for, styles of government more akin to a feudal state ("You will own nothing and be happy.") as long as it comes with welfare benefits. Every day seems to provide additional proof of that old adage: When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Thanks for producing the video. I will save it to a playlist for easy retrieval the next time I encounter online "experts" who proclaim that "No Canadian can own a private handgun." It's a debate I've engaged in previously. 😁 * We could add discussion of blue laws, natural resource exploitation versus protection, and more into the mix.

Depends on lead mixture (hardness) and how fast you try and push then. For my 45-110 with cast lumps @ 13 BhN the cutoff line seems to be right around 1450 fps before gas-cutting starts to occur and the barrel starts to build up lead deposits. Above that, gas checks are needed. Your experience will differ...
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 18 дней назад
That pretty much aligns with my experience. Gas checks buy quite a bit of additional velocity before leading. The cast bullet loads I make for my .30-30 never lead at all, even at 1,950 fps. Those ones I heat treat to add hardness however. And this all assumes proper bullet fit for the barrel of course.
@sampsonramm6630
@sampsonramm6630 18 дней назад
Some black powder shoots disallow gas checks. I got into this sport (tired of all things modern) to get away from anything copper jacket or "gas checked".
